This past Saturday we gathered to lay our brother Jim Emerton to rest. We want to thank everyone for all of the support they have shown the department as we navigated this unimaginable loss. There were too many small gestures of kindness to list here but know that they made an impact on the members of the department. We would especially like to acknowledge the help provided to us by the Worcester Fire Fighters Local 1009 ceremonial and funeral committee, the Sterling Police Department, the Worcester Police Department (Official) traffic division, the Holden Fire Department, Rutland Fire Department - Rutland MA, Boylston Fire Department, West Boylston Fire Department, Gardner Fire Department, Hudson MA Firefighters Local 1713, West Boylston Police Department, Massachusetts TERT, Worcester Fire Brigade Pipes & Drums, Massachusetts State Police, Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts (PFFM), Clinton Fire Department and Barre Fire Department. It has been and will continue to be a challenging time for our department and for Jim’s family and all who loved him, but the support shown by everyone throughout these past two weeks and especially on Saturday meant the world. Thank you for helping us give Jim the send off he deserved and continue to keep his family in your thoughts.

The Sterling Fire Department is heartbroken to announce the line of duty death of Firefighter/Paramedic Jim Emerton due to a long and courageous battle with occupational cancer.

Jim joined the Sterling Fire Department in October 2009. After a full and successful career in literature publishing, Jim found a passion for community service and emergency management after volunteering with the area CERT (Community Emergency Response Team). Jim quickly rose through the ranks by obtaining his EMT, his Paramedic license, and impressively finishing as the top student of his class at the Massachusetts Fire Academy at 50 years old.

Jim was truly one of a kind. His care and compassion for others, his intelligence, humor, and infectious smile made him beloved within our community and beyond. Jim had a solution for every problem, all while cracking corny dad jokes.

Jim is already deeply missed by his department members. We keep his family and all who love him in our thoughts during this difficult time.
