Current Read: Last Child in the Woods, by Richard Louv

Last Child in the Woods looks at how time in nature affects childhood development and well-being. It explores the idea of “nature-deficit disorder” and makes a clear case for why connecting kids with the outdoors matters.

This book will be discussed at the next Reading Nature gathering on Sunday, June 28, from 2:00 to 3:30 PM at the Sterling Nature Center.

31-May-2026; Acadian flycatchers along the Buttonbush Trail. Acadian flycatchers are one of several flycatchers that can be found at the Sterling Nature Center. Acadian, willow, alder, least, and yellow-bellied flycatchers look very similar; they are best separated by habitat and vocalization. Lucky for me, these were singing and in an appropriate habitat.

31-May-2026, a stop by McIntyre Bluff on my way in gave me an eye-level view of passing birds. I missed photos of a merlin, immature bald eagle and bank swallows but the gulls and vultures cooperated.
