“Virginia is the birthplace of American slavery and segregation” (Wapo, 2020).

In 2020, the murder of George Floyd forced non-Black people to face the realities of injustice in our nation that Black people have highlighted for hundreds of years. In June 2020, the Loudoun County School Board initiated discussion on an action plan to combat systemic racism, including a review of all Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) facility names and mascots, as a direct response to the Virginia Attorney General finding in 2019 that LCPS held discriminatory practices. In addition, according to Time Magazine, schools were encouraged by then-Department of Education secretary Atif Qarni and then-Governor Ralph Northam, both of whom supported statewide removal of Confederate leaders’ names of public schools. LCPS changed the Loudoun County High School mascot in 2022.

This work is not new. It was carried over from the previous school board, and the LCPS administration is asking for guidance from the school board if they intend to continue the process. This does not mean that the schools are being renamed instantly, nor that all of the schools identified will be renamed. The renaming process, outlined in LCPS board policy 6510, involves community input through town halls and the formation of a committee representing various stakeholders. This committee researches and submits renaming suggestions (which can include keeping the current name), which the school board considers for action.

An Odyssey of the Mind team from Goshen Post elementary school qualified to the World Finals in Ames, IA. They’ll be representing Loudoun County and the state of Virginia in this unique and challenging STEAM competition. They need our help to raise nearly $10,000 to cover the registration, transportation, lodging and shipping of props. Anything you could donate would be greatly appreciated.

Loudoun4All Statement on Changes to Public Comment at LCPS School Board Meetings

Recently, the Loudoun County School Board voted to remove video recording of public commentary during school board meetings. While the audio will still be broadcast, the video will display as a still frame. This vote has drawn immediate outrage from certain politicians, reaching as far as former President Trump. Loudoun4All believes that the “shock” and “outrage” are quite simply feigned.

Public input is crucial. However, allowing school boards to implement rules around public comment periods does NOT infringe on parents’ rights to express their opinions. It ensures that meetings can be conducted in a fair and productive manner, considering the needs of the community. “Small government” conservatives such as Glenn Youngkin and Donald Trump should respect the autonomy of local governing bodies in determining their own processes. It is ironic that the former President is suggesting a meeting at a private venue in response to changing guidelines around public comment sessions; undermining the principles of transparency and the very essence of public governance.

There is a wide range of public comment procedures and policies in school districts across the Commonwealth. Governor Youngkin said the decision to remove video was “stunning,” so we are sure he will also be “stunned” to learn that many do not provide any video recording of meetings at all. Loudoun County school board meetings have multiple instances of many hours of public comment. This fact could justify implementing a cap on the number of speakers or the amount of time that public comment is allowed. However, there are currently no limits on public comment. Loudoun4All has researched other public comment policies in other districts in Virginia to compare. You can review our research into public comment policies across Virginia on our website.

Looking at similarly sized nearby districts, Fairfax County school board meetings accept only sixteen public speakers, while Prince William County school board meetings allow for a maximum of one hour of public comment and thirty speakers. Yet, we have seen no outrage directed at any of the School Boards with far more restrictions on public commentary.

Once again, the outrage is less about the actual policy as compared to the policies of other school districts, and more about faux-outrage for political posturing. This is a change that is NOT outside of the norm for school districts like ours. LCPS continues to offer one of the most open policies for public commentary in Virginia. Loudoun4All calls on the public to ignore this distraction and to focus on real issues that can improve our schools.

"A number of school board candidates have also attended events hosted by Moms for Liberty, or sought its endorsement. Founded in Florida in 2021 by school board members fed up with pandemic-era guidelines in schools, the group has been compared to both parents groups that fought desegregation efforts in the South, and the 1970s anti-LGBTQ group Save the Children, led by activist Anita Bryant. The organization — which has grown to some 245 chapters in 45 states and a membership of more than 115,000 — was been formally designated an anti-government extremist organization by the Southern Poverty Law Center earlier this year.

Kari LaBell, candidate for Catoctin School Board in Loudoun County, called for “All Patriots” to donate to the group in the wake of the SPLC designation.

The idea that opposing book bans is tantamount to sexualizing children is a theme among this year’s candidates. Michael Rivera, running in Loudoun County, has floated the idea of forming a “parent panel” to decide which books students can read."

The same tide of parental rage that swept Gov. Glenn Youngkin into power is poised to transform school boards across the commonwealth

Empower Loudoun: Support Fact Sheets for the 2023 Virginia Elections!

As we gear up for this critical election, we are focused on equipping voters with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions at the polls. That's why we are launching a Fact Sheet Initiative, a resource that will provide voters in Loudoun County with clear, concise, and unbiased information about the issues that matter most to our community.

Your contribution will directly fund the production and distribution of these fact sheets, ensuring that voters have access to reliable information that will empower them to vote for candidates who truly represent their values and aspirations for a better Loudoun County.

We have set a goal of $2,500 to ensure that we can reach as many voters as possible with these fact sheets. A $30 donation will allow us to print 50 fact sheets. Every dollar counts, and your support will make a tangible difference.

Additionally, if you're unable to contribute financially at this time, consider sharing our initiative with your network. Every bit of support helps amplify our efforts. Together, we can ensure that Loudoun County remains a beacon of informed and engaged citizenship. Thank you for standing with us.

Show your support with a contribution.
