There are two main dates for VJ Day---
August 15, 1945 (Surrender Announcement): This is the date when Japan's announcement of surrender was broadcast to the world (and August 14 in the U.S. due to time zone differences, when President Harry S. Truman publicly announced the news). Countries like the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand officially commemorate V-J Day on August 15.

September 2, 1945 (Formal Signing): This is the official date when the formal surrender documents were signed aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. The United States officially observes V-J Day on September 2.
