Founded in 1986 and located in downtown Steubenville, Ohio, Historic Fort Steuben includes the reconstructed 18th century fort, Fort Steuben Park and Visitor Center, the First Federal Land Office and the Berkman Amphitheater. Historic Fort Steuben is part of the non-profit Old Fort Steuben Project (OFSP), organized in 1986 by community-minded citizens to reconstruct and promote the 18th century military fort and its place in state and American history. In the 30 years since then, the OFSP has transformed a blighted urban block into a city landmark with Historic Fort Steuben, the Fort Steuben Eastern Gateway Visitor Center, the First Federal Land Office, Fort Steuben Park, the Veterans Memorial Fountain and the Berkman Amphitheater. In 2019, over 40,000 people attended events or visited the site.

1897 Steubenville Centennial Celebration — Log Cabin

During Steubenville’s 1897 Centennial Celebration, a log cabin was constructed on the courthouse lawn at the corner of Third and Market Streets. The cabin displayed pioneer-era relics and represented the early settlers and frontier life of the Ohio Valley. It was part of the community’s celebration of its first 100 years of history and growth.

Ohio River Steamboats Coming to Steubenville, Ohio 🚢

During the early 1800s, steamboats brought excitement, commerce, and new opportunities to Steubenville, Ohio. Traveling along the Ohio River, they carried passengers, mail, and goods, connecting the town with Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and other river communities.

Steubenville also became a steamboat-building center. The Bezaleel Wells, completed in 1820, was among the early steamboats built locally. River landings became busy places where residents gathered to watch boats arrive and depart.

Steamboats helped shape Steubenville’s growth, making the Ohio River a vital highway for transportation and trade.

🌊 In 1910, the river still flowed without today’s modern lock-and-dam system to regulate navigation and water levels.

🇺🇸History, Innovation, and Adventure at Historic Fort Steuben 🇺🇸

Students from Steubenville City Schools had the opportunity to step back in time today during a unique educational experience at Historic Fort Steuben. Hosted by the Brigade of the American Revolution, the outdoor program featured 10 interactive stations that showcased life on the Ohio frontier during the late 1700s.

Through hands-on demonstrations and conversations with historical re-enactors, students explored the skills, tools, trades, and daily routines that shaped early American life. The experience brought Ohio history to life while reinforcing classroom learning about the Northwest Territory, early settlement, and the region's important role in our nation's development.

The event also incorporated STEM learning as students observed examples of early engineering, problem-solving, agriculture, transportation, and technology used by settlers and soldiers. By connecting history with real-world applications, students gained a deeper appreciation for the innovation, perseverance, and ingenuity that helped build our country.
