Portage County Literacy Council

Portage County Literacy Council "Changing lives, one word at a time." Founded in 1986. We offer one-on-one tutoring as well as small group instruction for adults.

Literacy provides adults with the opportunity to fully participate in our community - as parents, neighbors, employees, students, and friends. This includes immigrants or refugees who are learning English, as well as native speakers who would like to improve their reading, writing, and/or math skills. Each learner is matched with a trained adult tutor who will provide individualized instruction to

help each person learn at the best of their ability. Words & Friends 2026 is now a memory and I'd like to express my sincere gratitude to all who made it to the event last night. It was a lot of fun and went off without a hitch. I'd also like to mention that it's never too early to start thinking about next year, the more teams, the more fun. Have a great summer and please let me know if you have any suggestions for 2027!

As a child refugee with parents who didn’t speak English, I spent countless afternoons and weekends at the public library, discovering new words and new worlds, building my English skills one page at a time. Reading became one of the most powerful tools in my journey to learn English, grow, and find my place in a new world.

At the Portage County Literacy Council, we see the same transformation happening in our adult learners every day. This May, we're celebrating "Get Caught Reading" Month and the lifelong impact of literacy.

So go ahead, grab a book and get caught reading!

The Words & Friends for Literacy Scrabble smackdown was a total blast, and we’re still riding that triple-word-score high!

Huge thanks to everyone who showed up, threw down some serious word game heat, and supported adult literacy like the rockstars you are.

Big thanks to the Moose Family Center 1572 for the hosting space. The delicious food disappeared faster than a Q on a triple letter. Thanks for feeding us!

Our popular white elephant door prize table was a huge success again. Guests brought a gift, and when their name got drawn, it was game on. First come, first pick.

Big shoutout to our top-scoring teams:
- 1st place: 3 Constants and a Vowel
- 2nd place: Not So “Old National Bank”
- 3rd place: Scrabble Friends

Y’all made dictionaries proud.

Until next year, keep flexing that vocabulary and keep it classy with your consonants.
