Introducing the SPFD Safety Comic Series!

We are excited to roll out a brand-new Safety Comic Series featuring your favorite fire safety duo — Fire Marshal Hops and Deputy Fire Marshal Malin!

Each installment will highlight important safety tips in a fun, engaging, and easy-to-follow way for the whole community.

Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day, but damaged, overheating, or improperly charged batteries can quickly become dangerous and even start fires.

🛑 Remember these important safety tips:
✔️ Use the correct charger for your device
✔️ Charge devices on a hard, flat surface
✔️ Never leave charging devices unattended for long periods
✔️ Watch for warning signs like overheating, swelling, smoke, or strange odors
✔️ Recycle damaged or old batteries properly — never throw them in household trash

If a battery begins smoking or overheating:
➡️ Stop using the device
➡️ Move away from it if safe to do so
➡️ Call 911 immediately

We’re excited to continue using these comics to help educate our community in a fun and engaging way while keeping Stevens Point safe!

A Day in the Life of an MPO

Our next installment of “Day in the Life” features Motor Pump Operator (MPO) Ethan Przybylski!

As an MPO, Ethan plays a critical role in emergency operations by driving and operating fire apparatus, managing water supply, and ensuring crews have the equipment and support needed on scene. From pump operations at structure fires to apparatus maintenance and daily station duties, MPOs are an essential part of keeping operations running safely and efficiently.

Whether responding to emergencies, training with fellow firefighters, or helping maintain readiness throughout the department, Ethan’s dedication and professionalism help support both our crews and the community we serve every day.

This past Tuesday, we had the honor of hosting a “Firefighter for a Day”!

Our special guests had the opportunity to experience a day in the life of a firefighter — from learning about fire apparatus and equipment we use, to operating a fire hydrant and even flowing water through a fire hose alongside our personnel.

Events like these are a great reminder of the positive impact the fire service can have on our community and the importance of building relationships with the families we serve. Thank you to everyone who helped make the day so memorable and enjoyable!

We hope this experience created long lasting memories and inspired a future firefighter!

During Mental Health Awareness Month, we are proud to shine a green light at Station 1 in support of mental health awareness and su***de prevention. 💚

The fire service and emergency response professions face unique challenges, and it is important to remind our members and community that mental health matters. No one should struggle alone, and seeking help is a sign of strength — not weakness.

Throughout this month, our station has been illuminated green to help raise awareness, encourage conversations, and show support for those facing mental health challenges. Together, we can continue working to break the stigma surrounding mental health and support one another both on and off the job.

If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available. You are never alone.

Last week, Deputy Fire Marshal / Emergency Management Coordinator Malin and Firefighter / Paramedic Hionis traveled to the Kwik Trip Support Center in La Crosse, to meet with Kwik Trip representatives and discuss emergency response partnerships, coordination efforts, and opportunities for continued collaboration between public safety agencies and private industry.

During the visit, they also received a tour of the Kwik Trip campus buildings and operations center, gaining valuable insight into the company’s facilities, safety practices, and emergency preparedness initiatives.

We appreciate the opportunity to strengthen partnerships with organizations like Kwik Trip that are committed to safety, preparedness, and community collaboration.

Today, during National EMS Week, we observe EMS Remembrance Day — a time to honor and remember the EMS professionals who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Across the nation, paramedics, EMTs, firefighters, dispatchers, and first responders answer the call each day knowing the risks that come with serving others. Today, we pause to reflect on those who gave their lives while protecting and caring for their communities.

We also remember the families, friends, coworkers, and agencies forever impacted by these losses. Their sacrifice and dedication will never be forgotten.

The Stevens Point Fire Department stands alongside departments and EMS agencies across the country in honoring the courage, commitment, and legacy of fallen EMS providers. May we continue to serve with the same compassion, professionalism, and selflessness they demonstrated every day.

Please join us in taking a moment today to remember and honor those we have lost. 🇺🇸
