On June 9–10, 2026, RCUSA advocates had the opportunity to meet with Representatives Thomas Tiffany, Derrick Van Orden, and Gwen Moore, as well as Senators Tammy Baldwin and Ron Johnson in their Washington, D.C. offices.

It was a great opportunity to share our concerns and recommendations regarding current and future policies affecting immigrants and refugees. Our delegation was led by Olivia, who traveled from Wisconsin, along with Jack Mack, Musebo Kimbakimba, Kesiya Ramazzani, and myself.

During our meetings, we discussed several important issues, including pending Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) cases, humanitarian assistance for refugees and immigrants, the situation of Afghan refugees in camps in Qatar and their relocation to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, funding restrictions affecting immigration and refugee-serving nonprofit organizations and educational institutions, and many other critical topics.

We are hopeful that our voices were heard and that positive changes will follow.

A special thank you to Representative Derrick Van Orden for presenting us with a commemorative coin. It was a great honor to receive this meaningful gift, and I will proudly frame it as a reminder of this important experience.

Free Sewing & Basic Business Skills Development Program

We are excited to offer a Free Sewing and Basic Business Skills Development Program designed to empower women, refugees, immigrants, and community members through creativity, education, and entrepreneurship.

Our goal is to help participants develop practical skills that can lead to self-employment, income generation, and personal growth. The program also creates a supportive and welcoming environment where individuals can learn, connect, and share experiences.

Materials and sewing supplies will be provided free of charge.

Together, we create, communicate, and motivate communities through skill development and empowerment.

We successfully completed our workshop series from February to April, where we welcomed both new participants and returning students. Together, we created a safe and supportive space to learn sewing skills, while providing all necessary materials, sewing machines, notions, and extra fabric for continued practice at home.

Our mission goes beyond sewing—we are building connection. We are not only supporting immigrants and refugees, but also strengthening our broader community by bringing people together, encouraging understanding, and creating meaningful relationships.

This safe space has become a place not just for learning, but for sharing stories, culture, and kindness.

A heartfelt thank you to all the volunteers who dedicated their time and energy throughout the program. Your support made a real difference.

Ventures Beyond Borders (VBB) Bootcamp—an incredible opportunity designed to support entrepreneurs from refugee and immigrant backgrounds around the world.

VBB supports entrepreneurs globally by providing access to knowledge, mentorship, and resources needed to build successful and sustainable businesses. The VBB Bootcamp is a one-month virtual program that teaches participants how to develop, launch, and grow their companies.

Entrepreneurs selected for the Bootcamp may be invited to continue into the VBB Accelerator Program, where they can further refine their business and may become eligible to apply for investment opportunities of up to $100,000.

The training is conducted virtually by highly experienced professionals, making it accessible to participants across the world.
