Updated fire size and foot print map for the High Lava Fire.
Tonight we are issuing an updated, smaller fire perimeter of 878 acres for the High Lava Fire.
For the past three days, our usual infrared flight data was unavailable to the incident, which we typically use for detecting fire perimeters. Instead, yesterday we used the best available satellite heat data to detect the fire’s boundary.
Today, a drone operated by one of our hotshot crews was deployed to measure detailed heat data, resulting in a new map showing the fire's boundary as about half of yesterday’s estimate. The primary change is that the terrain directly south of the West Crater lava fields, near Forest Road 301, was confirmed to be unburned.
Thank you for your patience as we strive to keep our communication current, clear, and reliable.
