As we kick off National EMS Week, we recognize the dedicated EMS professionals who stand ready every day to provide critical care, comfort, and lifesaving service to our community. Their commitment to serving others—often in challenging and unpredictable situations—deserves our sincere appreciation and gratitude.

Excellence in emergency medical services requires a constant commitment to education and training. EMS professionals regularly engage in continuing education, skills development, and evidence-based medical training to stay current with the latest advancements in patient care. This ongoing investment directly enhances provider capabilities and leads to better patient outcomes when every second counts.

At Skamania EMS & Rescue, we are committed to supporting that growth through coordinated medical and operational training with our personnel and our fellow emergency response partners so we can strengthen every aspect of emergency response. From clinical patient care skills to scene operations and teamwork, our training efforts help ensure our providers are prepared to deliver safe, effective, and professional service to the community we proudly serve.

This week, we’re introducing one of our dedicated members of the Skamania EMS & Rescue team—Elliott Esayian!

Elliott joined Skamania EMS & Rescue in November as a Resident EMT and has been gaining hands-on experience providing emergency care in our rural community ever since. He is currently enrolled in the Paramedic program at PCC while also serving our agency through a weekly shift rotation.

We asked, Elliott answered:

What drew you to a career in emergency services?

The EMS/ Fire world has always interested me, so far I have really enjoyed engaging with people in the community and helping those that need assistance. The combination of community engagement, rescue, and emergency medicine are all factors that have drawn me to this career field.

What are some of the exciting things you have done since joining Skamania EMS as a Resident EMT?

I really enjoyed having the opportunity to take the Swift Water Rescue and Rope Rescue classes through the agency. Growing professionally and sharpening my everyday EMS skills through the resident program has been another thing I have enjoyed.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Eating pie, collecting hot wheels, working on various car and motorcycle projects, as well as exploring new places and meeting new people.

You are currently going to school to be a Paramedic. What are some of the challenges you face while both working and attending school?

Between work and school, I end up with limited free time. So balancing my personal life and my interests with school has been difficult at times.

Any words of wisdom for young adults considering a career in EMS?

It is a very unique career field, there aren't many other jobs that will give you the same rush and sense of community. I would highly suggest anyone who is interested to checkout EMT school, even if you don't pursue a career in EMS, it is all good knowledge to have. If you do pursue a career in EMS, there are a lot of cool opportunities out there! Don't be afraid to check out resident programs, seasonal jobs, etc. when trying to gain experience as a new EMT.

We’re grateful for Elliott’s commitment to learning, serving others, and being part of the Skamania EMS & Rescue family. If you see Elliott out in the community, be sure to say hello!

TRAINING NOTICE | Monday, April 27, 2026

The Paramedics and EMTs of Skamania EMS and Rescue will be out in areas of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest and rural communities on April 27-29, 2026 completing real time wilderness Swiftwater and Rope Rescue training evolutions. These trainings will incorporate members of our response partners Skamania County Fire District 4 and Skamania Fire District 1.

Operational rescue trainings keep our crew member skills sharp and keep them prepared for any kind of emergency they may encounter in the vast wilderness areas of Skamania County.

We ask that if you see these crews at work, please just smile, wave and keep driving by so they can focus on their tasks. Photos of the training will be shared with the public once evolutions are completed.

Celebrating Telecommunicators Week!

When an emergency happens, your first call isn’t to a firefighter, paramedic, or police officer—it’s to a 911 telecommunicator.

These dedicated professionals are the first line of support in moments of crisis. Whether the need is fire, medical, or law enforcement, they answer the call with calm, clarity, and compassion. While callers may be frightened, overwhelmed, or unsure of what to do, telecommunicators work tirelessly to gather critical information, provide life-saving instructions, and ensure the right resources are on the way—fast.

Behind every siren is a voice that made the response possible. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Today, we recognize and thank our 911 telecommunicators for their unwavering dedication, professionalism, and commitment to serving our community. Your steady presence in the most chaotic moments makes all the difference.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Community AED Deployed, Citizen Response to Emergency

On Saturday afternoon a citizen deployed an automated external defibrillator (AED) device that is supported by the Skamania EMS & Rescue Community AED program. The incident occurred in the gym facility during a community attended event on Stevenson-Carson school district property in Carson WA.

Skamania EMS and Rescue maintains and sponsors over 25 automatic external defibrillator devices throughout Skamania County. Many of these AED's are located in our schools, churches, public facilities and other community meeting locations. Their presence enhances our community members ability to help others until 911 is activated and our medical crews arrive on scene.

Skamania EMS crew members were unable to make contact with the fast-acting community members that activated the emergency response system and applied the AED to the victim; but we hope this announcement reaches them and that our heartfelt thank you is heard.

Community members that can provide cardiac resuscitation and apply an AED on an unresponsive person make a significant impact to that victim's survival. Skamania EMS and Rescue understands that a well-trained community is a safer community and would like to offer you the opportunity to attend our regularly scheduled CPR courses.
