On 5/16/26, Eureka Volunteer Fire and Ambulance got to kick off EMS Week with a very special moment.
On 4/5/26 Fire and EMS personnel from Eureka Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Company and Citizens Volunteer Fire Company (Station 56) responded to the area of Alum Rock and Wheat Road for a report of a subject in cardiac arrest. Upon arrival at location, personnel were met by one of the subjects grandsons who led them to the patient who was several hundred yards off the road, alongside a creek, where the patient had been fishing. When personnel made it to the patient, the patients other grandson was performing CPR.
Through great team effort, crews were able to quickly and safely remove the patient and transport them to a local hospital where the patient has made a full recovery. Yesterday, the patient and his wife made a visit to Eureka and were able to meet the crews that were there that day. This was truly a gratifying and humbling experience for all involved and stresses the importance of how providing hands only CPR can have a positive impact on a call of this type!
The grandsons (Rip & Kaizel Reichenbach)were both given Lifesaving Pins, the same pins were given to all of the first responders who were involved in this successful operation. They also received a Eureka department patch and to top it off they were given a personal ride aboard Truck 54.
Folks we can’t stress enough about how important it is for EVERYONE to know how to do CPR!!
