Happy National Donut Day! Big thanks to The Salvation Army for treating our staff to donuts this morning!

Fun fact: National Donut Day was created in 1938 to honor the “Donut Lassies," volunteers who made and served donuts to soldiers and communities in need during the Great Depression. Today, The Salvation Army continues that tradition by serving local heroes.

Who got the coolest ride to school this morning?

Two Eagle Point Elementary students did! Our deputies had the fun job of giving them a ride to school as part of an annual fundraising auction.

It's always a great day when we get to support our schools!

After more than three decades of service each, Deputy Chanin Klotnz and Deputy Lee Mars have begun their next chapter in retirement.

Deputy Klontz dedicated 33 years to serving this community, while Deputy Mars served for 32 years. Thank you both for the countless calls answered, lives impacted and years spent serving Washington County.

Congratulations on your retirement! You've earned it!

“It’s no wonder I’ve always loved stories about superheroes, the first one I ever met was my dad.”

Watch as Deputy Roy Gilman receives a heartfelt message from his son, Public Safety Telecommunicator Ryan Gilman, as he signs off for the final time after a remarkable career with the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

Happy retirement, Roy! Thank you for your service.

30 citations. 60 traffic stops. 4 hours.

That was the result of a Washington County Toward Zero Deaths traffic safety operation on I-94 in Woodbury on May 21. Most drivers were stopped for speeding, but deputies and officers also encountered several other violations including driving after revocation cases and one arrest.

You can expect to see more enforcement as the Toward Zero Deaths team works to crack down on dangerous driving during the 100 deadliest days on Minnesota roads, which is the time between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Enforcement efforts will continue focusing on the “Big Four”: Impaired Driving, Speed, Seat Belts and Distracted Driving. Let’s make it a safe summer. Buckle up, slow down, put the phone away, and stay alert.

Today, we welcomed seven new deputies who officially took the oath to serve and protect the Washington County community. We are honored to have them join our team and we’re equally grateful to have met the loved ones who proudly pinned their badges.

During the ceremony, Sheriff Starry shared the significance behind the song “The Weight of the Badge” and its powerful message. The song speaks to the responsibility, sacrifice and commitment that come with wearing the badge.

Congratulations to our newest deputies and thank you for service!

We do not own the rights to this music.

Today we pause to honor and remember the heroes who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice allows us the freedoms we cherish every day. In observance of Memorial Day, our front offices are closed today. We wish everyone a safe and reflective holiday.

Roadway safety is always a priority. The Office of Traffic Safety reports that speed and alcohol-related deaths are improving compared to 2025, but distraction and low seat-belt use are still major concerns. With Memorial Day through Labor Day being the busiest travel stretch of the year, we're grateful for deputies who are working every day to keep Washington County roads safer.

Last week, several of our deputies were honored at the MADD Awards Banquet for their outstanding work in DWI and distracted‑driving enforcement. Congratulations to Sgt. Joe Stoehr, Deputy Keith Schipp, Deputy Joe Roeser and Deputy Alec Zachrison. Not pictured are Deputy Frank Hintz and Deputy Allan Oyaas. Let’s work together to keep our roads safe this summer.
