Today we celebrate all mothers including the two Mothers of ARCOLA MILLS.
Gratia Mower, wife of John Mower and mother of 5 children. As important as that was to her it didn’t define her. Gratia is the definition of a pioneering woman traveling from Maine in 1840 across country and up the Mississippi to arrive at Arcola in 1847. Mother having 2 children in route to Arcola and 3 more born at Arcola. Educator, she was a strong force to set up Arcola school. Entrepreneur, to solve the problem of getting supplies she worked with Martin to set up the general store at Arcola, along with many other projects. Liaison Gratia was the negotiator with the native neighbors trading supplies for moccasins and furs and game. Hostess, Gratia planned and hosted many events involving clients to Governors.
Katharine Van Meier a mother of 2 was a remarkable woman who played a pivotal role in preserving a piece of history and fostering a creative community. In the 1930s, she and her husband, Dr. Henry Van Meier, discovered a property that Katharine famously described as “It’s a mirage.” Her vision and determination were instrumental in the 1.5-year process of purchasing and restoring the mansion, rescuing it from decay. With a deep appreciation for the arts and literature, Katharine served on the Stillwater Library Board for many years and envisioned the property as a haven for creativity. She transformed the estate into an artist colony by acquiring and placing whimsical cabins around the grounds, creating an inspiring environment for artists, writers, and families alike. Her enduring legacy is the donation of the estate to the Arcola Mills Historic Foundation, ensuring its preservation and use as a sanctuary to nurture the human spirit amidst the beauty of nature.
