From 1898 to 2026, from the Alcott School to Horace Mann to South High to North High to C.E. Donart / SHS, our high school program has come a long way from just six teachers and graduating class sizes of two to four children.

As we close out the final days of our fifth high school building, it's fun to look back on the schools' history, but we can't wait to see what the future holds.

An excerpt from the 1916 Bronze and Blue yearbook follows:

---

HISTORY OF THE HIGH SCHOOL

C. L. KEZER, Former City Superintendent.

In the year 1898, the Alcott School of the little town of Stillwater opened on the first Monday in September, with six teachers and a new principal, Mr. R. H. Ewing, who had been sought in Kansas at a late day. The former principal had been transferred to the State College late in August, so that the new management took charge rather unexpectedly and with some misgivings, both on the part of the management and on the part of the public.

The schools passed the year much as they had done for several years, with the eight grades and doing the usual work much in the same way as village schools are wont to do. The schools closed at the end of the following May and the problem of what to do with the boys and girls who were finishing the elementary school presented itself. There were those who favored building a High School, and there were those who were not in favor of this. The latter class sought to have the pupils go to the College for their more advanced work. Many reasons were advanced on both sides which tended to sustain both these views. The thing which became the determining factor was the fact that Stillwater had begun to make rapid growth in the last twelve months. In April, the Santa Fe railroad had been built into the city from Guthrie, the census had been taken of the city and it was found to have 2,500 people—the number required by law for being organized into a city of the First Class.

The new conditions made by the coming of the railroad and the growth of the city and the prospects for a larger growth seemed to indicate to the school board that the time had come to begin the establishment of a high school. There had been some work of the first and perhaps of the second high school year had been done in the past, but with the departure of the old principal the pupils who had been doing this work had gone to College. It was necessary then to begin at the bottom and build the entire structure.

The course of study was accordingly made, the teachers employed and the classes started. The task was slow and tedious for the first year. Most of the pupils who had finished the work of the eighth grade did not like the idea of staying in the new and uncertain High School that had been once begun and discontinued so they left and discouraged others. This continued more or less till the first graduating class was sent out from the high school. There were only three in number. The next year there were two, and the third year four. The school was affiliated with the State University from the first, and in a short time with the University of Kansas also.

Mr. Ewing did consistent and earnest work in keeping the school together and holding pupils till they completed the course for graduation. The quarters were most inadequate, being entirely housed on the third floor of the Alcott building. Mr. Ewing resigned in 1902 to accept a position in the Edmond State Normal School. and Mr. W. C. Jamison was chosen superintendent of schools. The opposition to the High School was strong but the Board of Education supported it and encouraged the teachers in their efforts to increase the attendance. During these years the superintendent taught several classes in the High School besides his regular duties of the department. Some of the early principals were: Norris T. Gilbert, J. H. Adams, and Martha Dunn.

Mr. Jamieson was elected to a position in the Edmond Normal in 1905, and Mr. F. F. Mace was the new head of the schools. During his term of two years the class graduating was increased to nine in 1907. The oppositions who were in favor of sending all pupils above the eighth grade to the college, were still to be reckoned with, but were dwindling in number and influence.

In the fall of 1907, C. L. Kezer began his term of seven and a half years, with an enrollment in the High School of about forty-five which was increased to about eighty before the end of the year. As the salaries were small, changes of principals and teachers were frequent, and with the departure of popular instructors often many pupils become discouraged and left. Mr. Robert Mayall (two years), Mr. Oliver Brilhart (one year), Mr. C. P. Blackwell (one year), Mr. B. F. Brown (two years), served in succession, each strengthening the school by their consistent earnest work.

In the fall of 1910 new quarters were occupied in the Horace Mann building, but these were soon outgrown. Although the rooms were crowded beyond the limits of safety a proposition for a High School building was defeated at a special election.

The teaching force was increased from three in 1907 to five in 1914. The graduating class the latter year was twelve.

In September 1914 W. D. Kennon took charge of the High School as principal with an enrollment of about 100 which increased to 124 before the end of the year. The spirit of the student body began to grow in favor of a better High School. The crowded condition became a serious handicap to the school but the character of the work and the general make up of the school continued to grow towards a greater High School.

In January 1915, Superintendent Kezer resigned to accept a position in Bellingham, Wash., and G. W. Dunlavy became city superintendent and soon proved himself in hearty sympathy with the High School and lent every aid at his command as had Mr. Kezer in furthering its welfare.

During the summer of 1915 additions and alterations were made in the buildings of the Stillwater Public Schools until the High School had much better quarters when it opened in September of that year.

In September 1915 school opened with an enrollment of about 125 and increased before the end of the year to 165. At the beginning of the spring semester in 1916 it became necessary to add another teacher, making the sixth. The past two years has greatly strengthened the science department in efficiency by adding considerable equipment and establishing regular double laboratory periods. Indications were never better for the future of a school than for Stillwater High School.
