Kids and hot cars are a deadly combination. It only takes 10 minutes for a car’s temperature to heat up by 20 degrees. A child’s body temperature can increase 3 to 5 times faster than an adult’s. Look before you lock. Learn more at: https://www.nhtsa.gov/campaign/heatstroke.

July is Sarcoma Awareness Month

Sarcoma is a rare cancer in adults (1% of all adult cancers), but rather prevalent in children (about 20% of all childhood cancers). Sarcomas can invade surrounding tissue and can metastasize (spread) to other organs of the body, forming secondary tumors. The cells of secondary tumors are similar to those of the primary (original) cancer. Secondary tumors are referred to as “metastatic sarcoma” because they are part of the same cancer and are not a new disease.

Sarcoma affects more than 50,000 Americans and the families and friends who are by their side. It can touch lives no matter what age and at any location on the body.

Sarcomas are cancers that arise from the cells that hold the body together. These could be cells related to muscles, nerves, bones, fat, tendons, cartilage, or other forms of “connective tissues.” There are hundreds of different kinds of sarcomas, which come from different kinds of cells.

July is National Cord Blood Awareness Month!
Celebrate by spreading the word about cord blood. Cord blood is the term used for the blood collected from the umbilical cord and placenta (after birth) when a healthy baby is born.

Cord blood banking means preserving the newborn stem cells found in the blood of the umbilical cord and the placenta. After a baby is born, and even after delayed cord clamping, there is blood remaining in the umbilical cord and placenta that holds valuable newborn stem cells. Parents have a choice between donating cord blood to a public bank for free, or paying to store it for their family in a private bank. Cord blood banking includes the whole process from collection through storage of newborn stem cells for future medical purposes. To learn more about cord blood banking, visit Parent's Guide to Cord Blood Foundation at https://parentsguidecordblood.org/en
