Severe weather will be possible Tuesday evening across a large part of Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas.

Areas from Oklahoma City to Tulsa to Fayetteville will need to keep a close eye on the forecast as storms develop later in the day and into the evening.

The main threats will include large hail, damaging winds, and the potential for a few tornadoes. Some hail could be very large if storms are able to become severe.

Now is the time to make sure you have a way to receive warnings Tuesday evening and overnight. We will continue to fine tune the timing and storm threats as we get closer.

Monday has the potential to become a BIG severe weather day across the Plains.
The Storm Prediction Center says a severe weather outbreak will be possible Monday afternoon into Monday night, with supercells capable of very large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes. They also mention an increasing risk for strong to intense tornadoes by Monday evening, especially from central Kansas into northern Oklahoma. It is still a few days out, so the exact corridor may shift, but this is absolutely a setup we need to watch closely. If you’re in Oklahoma, Kansas, or surrounding areas, now is the time to start paying attention and have a way to get warnings.

Wet Start Sunday

Sunday morning is looking wet across much of eastern Oklahoma, including the Tulsa metro.

Rain and storms should be ongoing early in the day, so expect a soggy start, slick roads, and some heavier pockets of rain at times. Not everyone gets severe weather, but it will not be the prettiest start to Mother’s Day.

The better severe weather setup on Sunday looks farther south, especially across north and central Texas, where SPC highlights the potential for large hail and damaging winds. For Oklahoma, the main Sunday morning issue looks to be rain and thunderstorms, with any stronger storm mainly capable of small hail, gusty wind, and heavy downpours.

Bottom line: keep the umbrella handy Sunday morning, give yourself extra time if you’re heading out, and keep the MCWX app close.
