🇺🇸 **A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR STUDENTS!**

Parents, students, educators, and school counselors in our community, I want to make sure you know about an excellent opportunity being offered through **VFW Post 12180**.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars is now accepting entries for its **2026–2027 Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy** youth scholarship programs.

This year's theme is:

🇺🇸 **“What a Veteran Taught Me About America.”**

Two programs are available:

📚 **Patriot’s Pen**
For students in **6th through 8th grade**, this is a 300–400 word patriotic essay competition. The national first-place winner receives **$5,000**, with additional awards available at the local, district, state, and national levels.

🎙️ **Voice of Democracy**
For students in **9th through 12th grade**, this is an audio-essay competition. The national first-place winner receives a **$35,000 scholarship**, with additional scholarships and awards available throughout the competition.

🗓️ **Deadline: October 31, 2026**

I especially encourage parents and educators to share this information with students who enjoy writing, public speaking, history, civics, leadership, or learning about the experiences of those who have served our country.

As a veteran, I believe opportunities like these are about more than scholarships. They give young people an opportunity to reflect on what service, sacrifice, freedom, and citizenship mean to them.

Artificial Intelligence is changing the way people search for jobs, but many job seekers are still using AI the wrong way.

Google recently highlighted three AI tools that can help professionals build a more effective job search strategy:

• Career Dreamer helps you identify career paths that match your experience and transferable skills before you start applying.

• Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) helps you compare multiple job announcements, identify recurring skills and keywords, and tailor your resume for the positions you actually want.

• Gemini Live allows you to practice interviews, strengthen your STAR responses, and improve the way you communicate your experience.

As a career coach, I believe the biggest lesson isn't the technology itself. It's the process.

The strongest candidates don't simply submit more applications. They prepare more intentionally.

Here's the approach I recommend:

1. Define your target career before updating your resume.
2. Analyze several job announcements to identify common qualifications.
3. Customize your resume and LinkedIn profile for the roles you're pursuing.
4. Practice interview responses out loud until they sound natural and confident.
5. Build your professional network while applying strategically.

AI is an excellent research assistant, but it cannot replace your experience, leadership, accomplishments, or professional relationships. Those are still what hiring managers value most.

Henry County is home to some incredibly talented writers, and one of the best-kept secrets for local authors is the Henry County Library System's Local Author Program.

The program allows local authors to have their published works considered for inclusion in the library's collection, helping connect our stories with readers throughout the community. The library also supports local writers through events like its annual Local Author Spotlight, creating opportunities to meet readers and celebrate local literary talent.

I'm proud to share that two of my books have been accepted into the Henry County Library System's Local Author Collection. It's an honor to know that members of our community can discover and enjoy my work through our public library.

So why don't we take the same approach to our careers?

Career Health™ is more than job satisfaction. It's about evaluating your professional readiness, leadership growth, skills, visibility, and long-term direction. When you regularly assess these areas, you're better prepared for promotions, career transitions, and new opportunities.

**To my fellow Veterans,**

One of the things I've learned is that many of us receive our VA disability compensation but never take the time to explore all of the additional benefits we've earned through our service.

If you're rated **100% Permanent and Total (P&T)**, you may qualify for benefits that can significantly improve your quality of life and support your family, including:

🇺🇸 Health care for eligible dependents through CHAMPVA
🎓 Education benefits for spouses and children (Chapter 35)
🏥 VA dental, vision, hearing, and caregiver support programs
🏡 Housing grants and VA home loan funding fee waivers
🚗 Adaptive vehicle assistance and travel reimbursement for VA appointments
🎖️ Commissary, Exchange, and MWR privileges
🏞️ Lifetime National Parks Pass
🏠 Property tax exemptions, disabled veteran license plates, and hunting and fishing benefits (varies by state)
💼 Veteran Readiness & Employment (VR&E) benefits, even if you already have a college degree

One important thing to remember: **many of these benefits are not automatic.** You may need to submit a separate application to receive them.

Take a few minutes to review your eligibility. You served our nation with honor, and these benefits were earned through that service.

Juneteenth reminds us that freedom is one of America's greatest promises. It marks the day, June 19, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Texas finally learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. It is a day to honor the strength, courage, and perseverance of those who never gave up hope. It is also a time for all of us to reflect on our history, celebrate progress, and recommit ourselves to building a more just and united nation where every person has the opportunity to succeed.
