“Society has lost sight of love. Those of us who still believe in doing things for the greater good sometimes feel like the minority. So many people have become focused solely on what benefits them that genuine kindness is often met with suspicion. We’ve reached a point where you can extend compassion with no ulterior motive, and someone will still find a reason to question it, criticize it, or complain about it. But I refuse to allow that to change who I am. There is still value in being kind, doing what is right, and caring about something greater than yourself.”

There has been a lot of discussions in regard to the council not showing deference to one particular’s council member’s claim of a development in their district, my responses is as follows:

The development being referred to is located in Downtown Stockbridge, near City Hall, the Amphitheater, and several other existing and planned developments. While the property may technically fall within the boundaries of one council district, Downtown Stockbridge is a citywide redevelopment and economic development priority and has long been an area of interest and focus for the entire Mayor and Council—not simply one council member.

There is an important distinction here. In other portions of that council member’s district, particularly established residential areas and subdivisions such as those in the Eagles Landing area, I would certainly respect and give considerable deference to the council member representing those neighborhoods and the concerns of their constituents.

Downtown, however, is different. It is the heart of our city and our primary redevelopment focus area. Decisions regarding development around City Hall, the Amphitheater, and the downtown corridor have implications for the entire City of Stockbridge—economic development, tourism, infrastructure, public amenities, and the overall direction of our city.

Therefore, although the property may geographically sit within one council district, the future of Downtown Stockbridge is a matter of citywide interest and responsibility for the entire Council. No single council member has exclusive interest in or responsibility for the development of our downtown area.
