California recognizes May as Wildfire Awareness Month. Wildfires threaten lives, homes, and communities — and prevention starts with all of us. Your California Highway Patrol encourages everyone to take simple precautions to help reduce wildfire risks:

🔥 Wildfire Safety Tips:
❌ Never toss cigarette butts from a vehicle
❌Avoid parking on dry grass
✅ Secure trailer chains to prevent roadside sparks
✅Obey all fire restrictions and evacuation orders
✅Have a family emergency bag with all essentials such as medications, documents, and supplies.
✅Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle during fire season and plan multiple evacuation routes
✅Maintain your vehicle at a minimum of half tank

Most importantly if you see smoke or fire near a roadway, report it immediately by calling 911 or local emergency services.

As temperatures rise and conditions become drier, everyone plays a pivotal role in preventing wildfires and keeping our communities safe.

Together, we can help protect lives, property, wildlife, and our highways. Stay alert. Stay prepared. Stay safe.

50th Year Remembrance Ceremony - Yuba City Bus Accident

Yesterday, we honored and remembered the lives impacted by the tragic accident on May 21, 1976. A choir group from Yuba City High School was traveling to Orinda with 53 passengers on board. At approximately 10:55 AM, the driver of the bus mistook the low air pressure warning light (used in buses equipped with air brakes) for a warning of low engine oil. The driver took the Marina Vista Avenue off-ramp from I-680 Southbound from the Benicia-Martinez Bridge. As the driver exited the freeway, the air brake system failed due to lack of air pressure. The bus struck a bridge rail and plunged down 21 feet, landing on top on its roof, crushing it to the base of the window line. The crash claimed the lives of 28 students and one teacher. The remaining 24 students survived thanks in part to the efforts of several first responders. This tragic accident led to nationwide school bus safety reforms that continue to protect lives today. The CHP is proud to play a key role in keeping our children safe by conducting thorough school bus inspections. CHP is dedicated to providing the great state of California with the highest level of safety, service and security.

📢 SEATBELTS SAVES LIVES 📢

Buckle up! From May 18-31, CHP will participate in the national Click it or Ticket campaign, reminding motorists about the importance of seatbelt use for every journey, regardless of distance.

CHP officers will be focusing on seatbelt enforcement with the goal of reducing injuries and fatalities in traffic crashes.

Whether you're behind the wheel or along for the ride, make sure everyone's wearing their seatbelt. Don't risk a citation- more importantly, don't risk your life. Putting on a seatbelt only takes a few seconds and could save your life in a crash.

Stay safe Stockton! 💙 🚔

🚧 Building a Safer San Joaquin County 🤝🏽

The CHP Stockton Area is pleased to report a 47% drop in the unsheltered population in San Joaquin County from 2024! This significant decrease can be attributed to the inception of our Special Enforcement Unit (SEU) and the close collaboration of Caltrans and our allied agencies. Many unsheltered individuals were connected with permanent housing and shelter resources, contributing to this positive progress within the community. Through teamwork, we continue making a positive impact throughout San Joaquin County.

🏍️ May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month 🏍️

With warmer weather here, more motorcycles are returning to our roadways. This month serves as an important reminder for all of us to stay alert, slow down, and safely share the road.

Drivers, please take an extra second to look twice for motorcycles when changing lanes or making turns. Check your mirrors and blind spots, avoid distractions, and leave plenty of space between your vehicle and riders.

To our riders, continue to ride safely, stay visible, wear the proper safety gear, and always ride responsibly.

Whether you travel on two wheels or four, we all share the same goal — getting home safely. By working together and staying aware of one another, we can help make our roads safer for everyone.

🏍️ Stay alert. Look twice. Share the road.
