🚔🚨 Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over — Summer 2026 🚨🚔
The Stone Harbor Police Department is committed to combating impaired driving. From August 19, 2026, through September 7, 2026, our agency will place special emphasis on impaired driving enforcement as part of the statewide New Jersey “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign.

During this mobilization, we will join law enforcement agencies throughout New Jersey in increased enforcement and public awareness efforts, in collaboration with the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety.

🍺 If you drink, don’t drive.
🚗 Designate a sober driver.
📱 Use a rideshare service or arrange for a safe ride home.
⚠️ Never get behind the wheel while impaired.

Impaired driving is preventable, and one impaired driver can put countless lives at risk.

This campaign may have a designated time frame, but our commitment to keeping impaired drivers off the road is year-round.

🚨Goal Zero Traffic Safety Initiative🚨

The Stone Harbor Police Department, in partnership with law enforcement agencies throughout Cape May County, will participate in the statewide Goal Zero traffic safety initiative on Saturday, August 15, 2026.

Goal Zero is a high-visibility traffic enforcement campaign conducted across New Jersey and supported by law enforcement agencies statewide. The initiative is designed to reduce preventable crashes, promote responsible driving, and advance the shared goal of achieving zero traffic fatalities on our roadways.

Participating officers will conduct targeted traffic enforcement with a focus on identifying and addressing impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving, aggressive driving, and failure to yield to pedestrians.

This month, we proudly honor the memory of Patti Smith Barrett. On January 2, 2026, shortly after noon, the 54-year-old Chatham resident was walking on the shoulder of Fairmount Avenue in Chatham Borough when she was struck by a Ford F-150 that had traveled from the roadway onto the shoulder. Patti suffered critical injuries and died in the hospital 5 days later.

The purpose of the campaign is not simply enforcement. It is to encourage every driver to make a conscious decision each time they get behind the wheel:

Put the phone down.
Slow down.
Stay alert.
Drive sober.
Watch for pedestrians and bicyclists.

ZERO DEATHS. ZERO INJURIES. ZERO CRASHES.
GOAL ZERO.

Sending our thoughts and prayers to the Wildwood Police Department, and the friends and family of Officer Shawn Stimmel.

It is with extremely heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Patrolman Shawn Stimmel Badge #365. Shawn began his career here in Wildwood in 2001. He held positions in the Patrol Division, Community Policing/Bike Unit, Field Training Unit, and as a School Resource Officer in the Wildwood School District.

Shawn was always the officer who could bring a smile and/or a heavy laughter to an entire room of police officers. His light-hearted and genuine approach to our demanding profession was a breath of fresh air. He grew up in the Wildwoods with his family owning and operating Bill’s Getty, and he worked as a youth at Schumann’s Restaurant.

We ask that everyone in our community keep Shawn’s children, family, and friends in their thoughts and prayers as they navigate this difficult time. The Wildwood Police Department would like to thank everyone in the law enforcement community and our local community who have reached out in support during this difficult time. The service arrangements will be shared once they have been arranged.

Officer Morales and other SHPD officers are looking to "catch" young cyclists wearing helmets, using the bike lane, and following safe cycling practices. Riders "Caught Doing Good" may receive a free ice cream treat as a reward!

This month, we proudly honor the memory of Navy Ensign John R. Elliott, who was tragically killed by a drunk driver on July 22, 2000. His legacy lives on through the HERO Campaign, which continues to encourage the use of safe, sober designated drivers and serves as a lasting reminder that every impaired driving crash is preventable. 🇺🇸

TRAFFIC ALERT SUNDAY 7/12/26

The Stone Harbor Triathlon will take place Sunday, July 12, 2026. Residents should expect town-wide delays from 6:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. The triathlon will utilize all major roads within town. Road closures will include Third Avenue from 87th St. to 90th St. and Second Ave. from 87th to 90th St.

While First Avenue will remain "open," expect delays after 8:00 a.m., as the majority of racers will transition from the bike course on Second Avenue to the run course on First Avenue. When this happens, traffic may be re-routed to Second Avenue, where the traffic posts will begin to allow vehicle traffic through, when possible.

It is strongly recommended that residents who do not need to travel during this time, do not do so. If you must travel through town during the race, please exercise patience and consider utilizing the following alternate routes.

Vehicles attempting to travel north from locations south of 87th St. are urged to take Stone Harbor Boulevard to the Garden State Parkway. Vehicles can then re-enter the island via Avalon Boulevard.

Vehicles attempting to travel south from locations north of 90th Street are urged to take Avalon Boulevard to the Garden State Parkway. Vehicles can then re-enter the island via Stone Harbor Boulevard.
