It's National Okra Day!

Perhaps one of the more "controversial" vegetables, okra is known for its slimy texture and jelly-like seeds. For some, this is a delicious food, for others, this is a hard NO. For those who DO like this vegetable, feel free to enjoy today by eating some gumbo or fried okra.

Oh, and if you're interested in growing some okra of your own, we have seeds directly from our living history farm for sale at the state park gift shop!

Although it may not feel like it, the summer season is coming to a close with schools now back to session. And with students back in class, it's time for teachers to begin booking field trips!

To make the booking process easier, we are happy to announce the launch of our new "Field Trips" tab on the LBJ State Park website! This tab gives you all the information you need to know for a school field trip, including grade-specific TEKS alignments, date availability, and how to reserve a tour.

All schools are welcome to book; including public, private, homeschool, and special needs groups. But be sure to act fast! Our living history farm is a very popular site for schools to visit, so we book up quickly.

Did you know that today is National Vinyl Record Day? 🎶

The record player as we recognize it today dates back to 1887, and reached its peak of mass production and usage in the 1970s.

The Beckmann family might have had a record player in their home by 1918, and could have played top hits such as Just a Baby’s Prayer at Twilight by Henry Burr, or Oh, How I Hate Getting Up in the Morning by Arthur Fields.

Despite newer technologies today, millions of people still enjoy listening to music on vinyl records. So go out and celebrate National Vinyl Record Day by playing your favorites!

Calling all 📷📷📷

To celebrate National Photography Day on August 19th, we are holding a photo contest! We want to see the amazing photos that you have taken here at LBJ State Park. The deadline to submit is Tuesday the 18th, so photographers are encouraged to snap some new shots at our park over the next week.

The winners of this contest will be announced on National Photography Day and have their photos chosen to be the new profile picture and cover photo for our social media pages.

Here are the rules:

1. All photos must have been taken by the person submitting the entries. AI generated photos not permitted. Horizontal photos will be considered for our cover photo and portrait photos will be considered for our profile picture.
2. Photo entries MUST showcase the Sauer-Beckmann Farm (livestock, buildings, garden, etc). There is a separate photo contest for LBJ State Park and Historic Site-Texas Parks and Wildlife.
3. Winners will be chosen by staff, not the number of "likes" on a single photo.
4. Photo entries must be submitted by placing them in the comments section of this post OR sending us a DM. All submissions due by Tuesday the 18th at 5 pm.
5. Limit of 3 photos per contestant.

We are so excited to see your photos!
