A wild and scenic night at the movies. Get you tickets now.

Wondering what films will be at this year's Wild & Scenic Film Festival? Leading up to the Earth Day (April 22nd) event we'll be highlighting some of this year’s amazing feature films. Don't forget to grab your tickets today at https://seatuck.org/wild-and-scenic-film-festival/!

Our first highlight is for Feathers in Flight. Biologist Mary Whitfield of the Southern Sierra Research Station has spent two decades studying one of North America’s rarest birds: the Southwestern Willow Flycatcher. At her research sites in California’s Kern River Valley, populations have dwindled to just a few pairs. Saving these birds is a challenge because they migrate south to Latin America in the winter and surprisingly, not much is known about their migratory route… or the migratory movements of many of North America’s most familiar birds. If we don’t know where migratory birds spend the winter or how they get there, how can we protect them?

To help her precious flycatchers, Mary has joined a cutting-edge effort called the Bird Genoscape Project (BGP). Led by Kristen Ruegg and Tom Smith, the BGP gathers data on birds’ genomes from individual feathers, allowing the researchers to connect breeding and wintering populations of the same species and provide critical information to conservationists and managers. Just as importantly, the project brings together researchers from all over the Americas in an effort to protect the birds that tie the Western Hemisphere together.

Was it the mowing, the blowing or the pesticides and clean, lifeless look that we loved? Or were we simply tempted by advertisements and peer pressure? The maintenance of lawns has generated a billion dollar business. THAT is what was- and still is the push behind the 'lawn fashion'. But if we want a healthy future we need a change. Don't you think it is preferable to spend money on nurseries and landscapers who are interested in creating a healthy habitat, rather than destroying it. It is up to us to create a new temptation. Let's start today. Thank you for helping to spread the message! www.healthyyards.org

Take care of your watershed!

This weeks warm weather reminded us that spring is right around the corner. And because none of us want to be this guy --who is oblivious to how his fertilizer is ending up in our coastal waters --it's important to manage our lawn care in a harbor-smart way.

Long islanders can have both healthy lawns and clean coastal waters. Click on the link below to find out how to manage your fertilizer and lawn to protect our surface waters, bays, as well as groundwater - from pollution due to lawn fertilizers.https://healthylawns.suffolkcountyny.gov/?fbclid=IwAR0HpwYsiN3YREDOeSyQQeniCc1OmoTPVaNg__0rKfhAH9x1k2Ftf6RhDoU
