Stony Brook Volunteer Ambulance Corps

Stony Brook Volunteer Ambulance Corps Employing the services of 70-90 dedicated volunteers and 3 operational ambulances, SBVAC also provides mutual aid to neigboring Fire and EMS services.

The Stony Brook Volunteer Ambulance Corps (SBVAC) is a New York State Certified Ambulance Service that primarily serves the SUNY Stony Brook University campus on Long Island. Since its founding in 1970 by a small group of university students, SBVAC has grown into a collegiate EMS agency that provides one of the highest standards of emergency response care in New York State. SBVAC is certified by S

uffolk County to perform emergency response care up to an Advanced Life Support level, which covers interventions such as the administration of medications through IVs and endotracheal intubation by EMTs trained to the Critical Care and Paramedic level. Members of SBVAC are predominantly EMTs trained to a Basic Life Support level (NYS EMT-B), with a significant number also holding certification of EMT-CC (Critical Care) and EMT-P (Paramedic). With very few exceptions, all non-probationary members of SBVAC are expected to hold current EMT certifications. At any given time all members are certified in AHA Professional Rescuer CPR. Membership of SBVAC consists of primarily students attending SUNY Stony Brook, but membership is not limited to students. Faculty and alumni of SUNY Stony Brook and other well-intentioned members of the Suffolk County community have all made up the membership of this agency.

Last week, SBVAC participated in an annual MCI drill hosted by Stony Brook University Emergency Management. This full-scale multi-agency exercise brought together EMS and fire departments from across Long Island to simulate a coordinated response to a large-scale emergency. SBVAC was the first to respond and assume roles within the incident command structure. This exercise was designed to prepare and strengthen our response capabilities through inter-departmental collaboration. Thank you to all of the agencies and personnel who participated and helped make this drill a valuable training!

Special shoutout to for joining us! It’s an honor to train alongside such exceptional providers particularly for the unique challenges that collegiate EMS agencies face, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to collaborate together! 🚑

This weekend, SBVAC attended the 2025 National Collegiate EMS Conference in Pittsburgh! There, SBVAC proudly received the EMS Ready Campus Silver award, advancing from the Bronze achievement earned last year to reflect enhanced and integrated emergency preparedness planning and training. SBVAC was also one of the first six out of 250 collegiate EMS agencies nationwide to receive the MERIT Recognition award. Members also listened to informative medical lectures, including a presentation by SBVAC alumni Gary Hecker, and two of SBVAC’s members contributed and showcased their work to the Journal of Collegiate EMS! Thank you to our committed membership and supportive campus community for making every SBVAC milestone possible!
