***COMMUNITY UPDATE TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT***

After months of specialized training, and several disciplinary incidents involving shiny objects, the Storm Lake Police Department is proud to announce the launch of our newest distracted driving enforcement initiative:

Operation Caw & Order.

Meet our newest patrol officer…..Ned… "The Fed" Raven.

Ned is our highly trained “eye in the sky”. He will primarily working the downtown district where he watches for drivers using cell phones behind the wheel.

When Ned observes a violation, he immediately alerts officers by loudly CAWING. Three caws=probable cause for a traffic stop. (According to Ned.)

Ned's training has exceeded our expectations. He can positively ID texting, scrolling, taking selfies (with and without a selfie stick), and most attempts to hide a phone in your lap at distances inside 200 feet.

He is also 87% accurate at identifying people who are "just checking one thing real quick."

Remember, the next time you see a raven staring at you, it might be Ned... or it might just be a random bird. Either way, if you're not using your phone while driving, you won't have to worry about who's watching.😉

Ned... "The Fed" (El Federal) Raven.

Good afternoon Storm Lake!

As the use of e-bikes, e-scooters, mini-bikes, and other electric-powered devices continues to grow in our community, we want to hear from YOU.

The Storm Lake Police Department is currently exploring possible safety regulations and city ordinances involving these devices, and we will be meeting with city elected officials next week to discuss potential directions moving forward.

Before any decisions are made, we want community input.

We know these devices provide fun, recreation, transportation, and freedom for many riders, especially our youth. But we also recognize the growing concerns involving speeds, sidewalks, trails, traffic, and pedestrian safety.

Our goal is to find the right balance between allowing responsible use while keeping everyone in our community safe.

Nobody loves more regulations, and we understand that. At the same time, we have seen an increase in accidents, close calls, and complaints that tell us we need to work together on reasonable solutions that protect riders, pedestrians, motorists, and families enjoying our parks and trails.

And while most of us can laugh remembering Gary and Lloyd cruising cross-country on that tiny scooter in Dumb and Dumber… real life traffic, trails, and sidewalks in Storm Lake require a little more planning and safety awareness. 😊

So what would you like to see in a city ordinance?
What concerns do you have?
What ideas or solutions would help keep Storm Lake safe while still allowing responsible recreational use?

We want your opinion, and we want to get this right.

Please share your thoughts in the comments or contact us directly. Your feedback will help guide future discussions and recommendations.

Thank you for your trust and partnership.

¡Buenos tardes, Storm Lake!
