ement agency and fully functional police agency with the same statutory authority as any municipal police department in the State of Connecticut. The Department is responsible for, and its primary mission is, the protection of lives and property at the University of Connecticut and all adjacent areas within the jurisdiction of the UConn Police Department. This includes the main campus in Storrs and regional campuses located throughout the state. The UConn Fire Department (UCFD) is made up of three divisions: Fire Operations, Fire Administration, and the Fire Marshal and Building Inspector’s Office (FMBIO). UCFD plays a critical and diverse role in safety at the University. Annually, the UCFD responds to 3,000 emergency calls, including emergency medical incidents, fires, hazardous materials incidents, elevator entrapments, odor investigations, gas leaks, confined space incidents, fire alarms, and motor vehicle accidents. These include: standby at men’s and women’s basketball, basketball first night, men’s and women’s hockey, football, soccer, track and field tournaments, pump testing, helicopter landings, concerts, annual lip sync, horse shows, polo games, high school visits, K9 Olympics, OOze ball, spring weekend, commencement, move in weekend, convocation, Halloween, parades, fire watches, and more. UCFD is responsible for safety inspections across the University. Inspections include sprinklers, alarms, valves, standpipes, buildings, engine companies, preplans, hot work permits, and annual dormitory fire drills that occur once per semester. UCFD actively promotes and maintains safety with ongoing public education programs, including tours for FYE classes and children, lab safety, and RA trainings. As part of the Division of University Safety, the Office of Emergency Management coordinates emergency preparedness, response, and recovery activities. Using an all-hazard approach, we’re responsible for the development, implementation, training and review of UConn’s Emergency Operations Plan and Business Continuity Plan. The Office of Emergency Management coordinates preparedness efforts and emergency training of staff, faculty, and students across every UConn campus. The mission of the University of Connecticut Office of Emergency Management is to utilize a proactive and comprehensive leadership approach in all-hazard preparedness, response, recovery, and prevention planning. The coordination of these resources thereby ensure assistance and support for the protection of life and property, incident stabilization and business continuity to the University’s campuses and communities. Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), promotes the safety of students, faculty, and staff in laboratory, workplace, and residential settings. We provide training, inspection, and consultative services to support laboratory safety, food safety, public health, safety in shops and studios and other settings where students learn, work, and live. The Mission of Environmental Health and Safety is to support and promote a culture of safety, environmental protection, and compliance at the University by providing leadership in the identification and management of safety, health, and environmental risks. EHS administers comprehensive programs and services that ensure the welfare of our faculty, staff, students, visitors, and the environment, supporting the University’s mission of research, teaching, service, and outreach.
