Today we were in Manchester for CT Green Snow Pro for Roadways, a Road Scholar Elective Workshop. T2 Instructors Jim Mahoney and Tom Modzelewski covered sustainable winter operations, including the environmental impacts of salt use, equipment calibration, and best practices for salt application. The calibration demonstration and winter storm exercise gave participants a deeper understanding of these topics.

🚌 Back-to-School Means Safety First

School is back in session, and that means new routines and new traffic patterns.

As students head to bus stops, walk to school, and parents navigate drop-off lines, our roads become much busier.

A few simple reminders:
⏰ Leave a few extra minutes for your commute.
🚸 Watch for children crossing the street and walking near roadways.
🚗 Be patient as everyone adjusts to the new school-year routine.
A little extra time and awareness can make everyone's commute safer and less stressful.

Road Scholar Program participants were in Guilford yesterday for Expecting an Inspection: Getting Ready for OSHA workshop.

The workshop focused on identifying common hazards in public works facilities, understanding the OSHA inspection process, maintaining required records, and preparing for compliance. Participants also completed a facility walk-through exercise demonstrating what typically occurs during an inspection.

We’re kicking off the T2 Fall 2026 training season with our Pedestrian Signals & Auxiliary Equipment workshop, part of the Traffic Signal Technician Program! Participants explored ADA, PROWAG, and MUTCD requirements for pedestrian signal design and accessibility, along with industry best practices for accessible installations and operations. A special thank you to Marissa Tarallo (AKRF), Stephen Frycz (City of Stamford), and Shawn Barry & Jason Hughes (T2 Center Safety Technical Associates) for sharing their expertise!

Today, our UConn T2 Center Safety Circuit Rider (SCR) team was proud to participate in the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) & WTS-CT 36th ADA Anniversary Event in Norwich.

Shawn Barry, Safety Technical Associate, led the Empathy at the Intersection exhibit, giving attendees a hands-on opportunity to experience accessibility challenges and better understand the importance of designing safe, inclusive transportation systems for everyone.

This week, members of the UConn T2 Center team attended the National Local & Tribal Technical Assistance Program Association (NLTAPA) Annual Conference in Louisville, Kentucky!

We connected with our national partners, shared ideas, learned new strategies, and explored innovative tools to better serve Connecticut's transportation workforce. Our team was also proud to present educational sessions, help moderate conference discussions, and kick off the week by leading LTAP U.

And of course, we made time to experience the incredible sights and hospitality of Louisville! Thank you, NLTAPA, for a fantastic week of learning, collaboration, and inspiration. We can't wait to bring these ideas back home!

Day 5 of Rural Road Safety Awareness Week: Uncommon Cruisers! 🚜🐎✈️

From ATVs and UTVs to horse-and-buggies, bush planes, and even dog sleds, rural communities rely on unique modes of transportation. No matter how you travel, safety matters. Slow down, stay alert, avoid distractions, and respect all road users.

As comes to a close, let's continue working together to make every rural trip a safe one. Everyone deserves to get home safely.

🚌 Day 4 of Rural Road Safety Awareness Week: Route Runners

Today's focus is on buses, rail, rideshare, on-demand shuttles, and school buses. Public transportation is one of the safest ways to travel, but everyone plays a role in keeping riders safe. Stay alert around transit stops, watch for pedestrians, and support accessible transportation for all.

🚛 Rural Road Safety Awareness Week – Day 3: Big Movers

Today's theme highlights the large vehicles that keep rural communities moving, including commercial trucks, emergency vehicles, snowplows, and farm equipment.

Remember:
🚒 Move over for emergency vehicles.
❄️ Give snowplows plenty of space.
🚜 Slow down for farm equipment.
🚛 Be patient—large vehicles need extra room to turn and stop safely.

Safe roads are everyone's responsibility.
