The Story City/Lafayette Township Firefighters Association is proud to announce this year’s scholarship recipient, Keely Oberender.

Each year, scholarship applications are reviewed anonymously by committee members, with identifying information removed during the selection process. This blind review helps ensure the scholarship is awarded based solely on the applicant’s achievements, character, leadership, and commitment to service.

Keely’s application stood out for her academic success, leadership roles, extracurricular involvement, and dedication to serving others throughout the community. From volunteering through church programs, Meals on Wheels, food drives, youth activities, and events at the fire station to serving as a team captain and student leader, Keely has consistently demonstrated the values our department strives to represent.

Keely will attend Dordt University this fall to study Public Relations, with the goal of one day becoming a college admissions counselor and helping students navigate their own educational journeys.

Congratulations, Keely! We are honored to support you as you begin this next chapter and look forward to seeing all you accomplish in the future.

🚩 PLEASE USE EXTREME CAUTION TODAY 🚩

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for central Iowa today due to dangerous fire weather conditions.

Strong west winds, very low humidity, and dry vegetation mean fires can start easily and spread extremely fast.

What this means for our community:
• Avoid all outdoor burning today
• Do not burn brush or recreational fires
• Use caution with equipment, trailers, chains, and anything that could create sparks
• Properly dispose of ci******es and smoking materials

Even a small spark can quickly become a large grass or field fire under these conditions.

Please help keep our community, farms, and first responders safe by postponing any activities that could start a fire.

Last night, we celebrated some incredible milestones at our annual Awards Banquet, and we’re proud to recognize a few of our own for their years of dedication and service to the Story City Fire Department.

Berry Saunders – 10 Years of Service
Chris Engelhardt – 15 Years of Service
Ryan Peterson – 20 Years of Service

Thank you, Berry, Chris, and Ryan, for your commitment to our community and for the countless hours spent training, responding, and serving with integrity.

We also want to congratulate Cale Doyle, who was named our Doug Stevens Firefighter of the Year.
The Doug Stevens Firefighter of the Year Award recognizes a member who demonstrates unwavering dedication, loyalty, productivity, and the highest standards of the fire service. Cale embodies all of these qualities, and we’re proud to honor him.

Thank you to all our volunteers for everything you do, and thank you to our community for your continued support.

Last Saturday, our crews responded to this serious crash on Highway 69 just south of Story City after a vehicle crossed the center line and collided head-on with oncoming traffic. Luckily, no major injuries were reported but that’s not always the outcome.

With the holiday season upon us, we want to echo the Sheriff’s Office reminder that impaired driving puts lives at risk in an instant. This incident was preventable, and choosing a sober ride truly can save lives.

As always, thank you to our community for driving safely and for supporting the work our volunteers do every day.

🔥 Fire Prevention Week 2025! 🔥

Today we visited Roland-Story Elementary to teach students about fire safety through fun, hands-on activities and demonstrations. 🚒

Students learned about home escape plans, smoke alarms, and what to do in an emergency.

We love the opportunity to help keep our community’s youngest members informed, confident, and safe.❤️

Let us never forget the sacrifices made on this day - the firefighters, law enforcement officers, paramedics, and everyday citizens who showed extraordinary bravery. Their legacy lives on in every act of service, every commitment to community, and every promise to protect one another.

As we reflect, let us also be reminded of the importance of unity, compassion, and resilience.

Today, we honor. We remember. We serve.

We are incredibly grateful to Pledge Insurance Advisors, Nationwide, and the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety for their support and partnership in bringing vital grain bin rescue equipment and training to our department. The new grain rescue tube is a critical addition to our rescue capabilities, and the hands-on training will help us serve our community even better.

The Story City Lafayette Township Fire Department is honored to announce the recipient of our 2025 Firefighters Association Scholarship: Tristan Peterson!

This scholarship, established in 2016, is one way we give back to the community we serve. Each year, a committee reviews anonymous applications, looking for students who go above and beyond both in school and in service to others.

This year’s applicants impressed us once again with their thoughtfulness and dedication, making our decision a tough one. We’re proud to recognize Tristan for his outstanding commitment and wish him continued success on his journey after high school.

Congratulations, Tristan!
