Bicycle, eBike, and eScooter Safety Focus
With the arrival of warm weather and the school year nearing it's end. the Stoughton Police Department will be conducting an increased focus on bicycle, eBike, and eScooter safety throughout town.
We’ve seen an increase in unsafe operation of bicycles, eBikes, and eScooters , particularly among juveniles, including riders without helmets, failing to follow traffic laws, and in some cases, intentionally riding in ways that create dangerous situations for both riders and motorists.
As part of this safety initiative, officers will be stopping violators to educate them about bicycle safety. Where it is appropriate, issuing citations, and impounding bicycles operated by juveniles 16 years old and younger for 15 days in cases of reckless or unsafe operation.
Please remember:
âś… Bicyclists must follow the same traffic laws as motor vehicles.
âś… Riders 16 years old and younger are required by law to wear a helmet when riding a bicycle or eBike.
✅ eScooter operators must have a driver’s license or learner’s permit and wear a helmet.
We’re also asking parents and guardians to take a few minutes to talk to their children about bicycle and eBike safety—including wearing a helmet, following the rules of the road, and riding responsibly. These conversations make a big difference in keeping our young riders safe.
This increased enforcement is not about punishment — it’s about safety. Our goal is to prevent injuries and accidents and ensure that everyone, riders, drivers, and pedestrians alike, can safely share the road.
We appreciate the community’s cooperation as we work together to make Stoughton’s streets safer for everyone.
