The Massachusetts Firefighting Academy's certification system ensures that every student in every course gets a fair and unbiased evaluation of their ability to meet the established job performance requirements. That process has been scrutinized and validated by The Pro Board, the "gold standard" for fire service accreditation. If you (or your college-age kids) are moving into off-campus housing in September, look for fundamental life safety measures like working smoke alarms and two ways out. A properly installed and maintained fire sprinkler system is ideal! If the rent seems too good to be true, it probably is -- don't sign a lease on an unsafe living space.

The Lowell Fire Department sent along this footage of a scooter battery fire that started in a multifamily home a few months back. 152 years ago today, Henry S. Parmalee received a patent for the first automatic fire sprinkler head. Today, properly installed and maintained remain the most effective way to protect people, pets, and property from fire until firefighters arrive. Just look at the difference after last week's demonstration with the Belchertown Fire Department -- the room protected by a single sprinkler head has only minor damage, while the unprotected room is a total loss after a fire that would have been deadly.
