Held annually on the third Friday in September, as established in 1979 by the president, National POW/MIA Recognition Day honors Americans who were prisoners of war (POWs) or remain missing in action (MIA) from all U.S. conflicts.
According to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, over 80,000 U.S. service members remain missing since World War II.
