As you start digging out from this weekend’s blizzard, taking a few small steps now can make a massive difference in an emergency. Help yourself (and our first responders) stay safe with this post-storm checklist:

• Ensure there is a shoveled path to every door in your home. If you need to get out fast, you don't want to be fighting a snowbank.
• Clear snow away from furnace, water heater, and dryer vents to prevent carbon monoxide buildup inside your home.
• Make sure your house number is visible from the street so emergency crews can find you quickly.
• If you have a fire department water supply near your property, please shovel a 3-foot perimeter around it. Every second counts during a fire.
• Take a moment to check on neighbors, especially the elderly or those who may need an extra hand with shoveling.

No ice is 100% safe! Firefighters across the state, including right here in Stow have already been out rescuing people and pets who have fallen through.
Between fluctuating temperatures, heavy snow layers, and recent rain, there is simply no way to guarantee the ice is thick enough to hold you.

• No ice is safe ice. Conditions can change by the hour.
• Keep pets on leashes near frozen bodies of water.
• If you see someone fall in, call 911 immediately. Reach out with a branch or rope, but do not go onto the ice yourself.

Recently, one of our members attended a specialized training session focused on enhancing critical fireground skills.
This program provided hands-on experience with modern techniques and equipment, ensuring our team stays at the forefront of emergency response. Our member is now bringing this valuable knowledge back to the department to share these skills and best practices with the rest of our crew. Thank you to Massachusetts Association of Technical Rescue Specialists: MATRS and Water Training Resources for making this class available
