Sad new from our colleagues at Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service as they mourn the loss of their Chief, Don Smith. Don was dedicated to the communities he served and will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with Don's family and Monroe EMS during this difficult time.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Monroe EMS Chief Don Smith after a courageous battle with cancer. Don passed away today at home with his family by his side.

Don played such a huge role in making Monroe EMS what it is today and he was passionate about providing excellent patient care and supporting the service and our members. From caring for thousands of patients to his focus on community and EMS education and developing future first responders, he has a legacy that will live on in others. We are also thankful for his leadership - serving for the past 12 years as Chief, ensuring we had the latest equipment, coordinating administrative operations, and for his vision for the new station and the countless hours of work that went into that. In addition to his focus on EMS, Don also served the community with the Fairfield Police Department for 31 years, retiring in 2021 as Deputy Chief of Police. He truly made a difference - every day.

Please keep Don and his family in your thoughts and prayers - they mean so much to us and we will be there for them. They will always be part of our EMS family.

We will provide information on arrangements as details are confirmed.
