Perfect timing.
8 days after a multiagency training in a simulated snowmobile crash in Carrabasset Valley we had a actual accident in Eustis.
Friday afternoon January 16 Eustis Fire Department, Maine Game Wardens and EMS 61 was dispatched to trail ITS -89 in Eustis for a snowmobile accident with injuries.
5 members responded.
1 went directly from home on a snowmobile with a radio and medical gear to locate and update all other responding units. From the time of the call to arrival to the patient was about 17 minutes.
4 other members responded to the station to pick up specialized gear to be able to safely remove the injured person to a staging ambulance.
The injured person was treated and packaged at the site of the accident by EFD members then transported by Rescue toboggan to EMS 61 staging area.
Patient was then administered advanced life support and was transported to a hospital.

Mitchel brings the highest levels of professionalism to the multiple public safety agencies that he serves. We at Eustis Fire Department are thankful that he still finds time to serve EFD despite his many other commitments.

Recently, at our annual Divisional Meeting, the following Maine Forest Rangers were recognized for their outstanding commitment to protecting Maine's forests and communities.

Live Saving Award

Ranger Mitchel Stapleton

On June 16, 2025, Ranger Mitchel Stapleton was on patrol in Trenton when he overhead units dispatched to a male subject reportedly seizing and experiencing agonal breathing only a few minutes from his location. Ranger Stapleton advised dispatch that he would be enroute and arrived on scene within minutes, along with units from Trenton Fire Department.

Upon arrival the patient was found unresponsive, with no pulse and Ranger Stapleton quickly determined the symptoms were likely the result of an acute drug overdose. Ranger Stapleton and Fire Department personnel jumped into action and administered a dose of Narcan and began performing CPR in an attempt to start the patient’s heart. A second dose of Narcan was given along with another round of CPR, which proved successful in reviving the patient, who became responsive and alert.

It is without a doubt that Ranger Stapleton’s quick actions and commitment to training, readiness, and service saved the life of this individual. His actions represent a standard that every Maine Forest Ranger should strive to achieve, where the preservation of life is held as the highest duty to uphold. For his honorable actions, Ranger Stapleton is hereby awarded the Maine Forest Service, Forest Protection Division Life Saving Award.

At 1320, on August 30, 2025, Eustis Fire Department, Maine Health EMS, Franklin County Sheriff's Office and the Maine Warden Service were dispatched to Flagstaff Lake in the vicinity of Cathedral Pines Campground beach for an overturned boat with occupants trapped under the vessel. Eustis Fire Department had personnel on scene within 2 minutes of the call, established command, activated a MCI [Mass Casualty Incident] and began a water rescue and care for the injured. EFD Utility 2, Rescue 1, and Marine 1 responded from the station staffed with a combination of Fire Firefighters and EMS personnel. Mutual AId was requested and received by Carrabassett Valley Fire Department, Life Flight of Maine and Anson Madison Ambulance Service. Eustis Fire Department turned patient care over to the responding EMS agencies and remained on scene to support the Law Enforcement investigation. All personnel and apparatus returned to service at 1800. Eustis Fire Department sends our sincere condolences to all that were impacted by today's events.

Great opportunity to train with multiple public safety agencies.

Maine Game Wardens recently participated in a LifeFlight of Maine training to be better prepared for emergency situations in rural areas, where access to emergency medical services can be delayed due to travel time and terrain.

Wardens learned where the LifeFlight planes and helicopters fly from, flight condition limitations, estimated response time, and the advanced level of care provided by the highly skilled medical crew on board. They also received instruction on how to identify and create safe landing zones for air transport in remote locations.

The training was at Megantic Fish and Game Club in Seven Ponds Township, and was also attended by the Club’s staff, Border Patrol Agents, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agents. LifeFlight of Maine is the state’s only air ambulance service.

Thanks to Maine Game Wardens, LifeFlight of Maine, and all first responders and emergency medical service providers who are always prepared for any emergency, in all corners of our large, rural state.

NOTICE: IMMEDIATE CLOSURE
The Sawyer Brook Road and Elephant Head Section is now closed to all ATV traffic. There is a heavy logging activity on most of the trail and there is no room for both atv's and the heavy equipment crossing back and forth on the trail. You can still access Split Rock Trail and the Tim Pass trail can be accessed off from Rock Hill and the back side of Split Rock. Once you go over the pass you will need to turn around and go back over it. Different scenery each way! We will let you know if we will be able to use the closed trail on Saturday and Sundays when there is no logging going on. Please DO NOT travel that section of closed trail as there will also be logging trucks using it as well. We do not want anyone getting hurt or worse. The section circled in black on the map is the closed section. It will be signed closed early tomorrow morning.
