His great-grandfather went underground with a carbide lamp and a canary, he goes down with sensors that can detect gas before he'd ever smell it.

Coal mining still continues today in parts of Appalachia, though the industry looks dramatically different than it did a century ago, far fewer miners employed overall, but those still working underground now do so with vastly improved safety equipment, gas detection technology, and regulatory oversight that simply didn't exist during the era of black lung epidemics and disasters like Farmington. The job remains genuinely demanding physical labor in a still-shrinking industry, but the daily risks a modern miner faces look almost nothing like what his grandfather or great-grandfather encountered underground.

LET THEM HATE.

I honestly think it’s kind of funny that some people genuinely get irritated because we love this job.

They hate that we talk about it.
They hate that we train for it.
They hate that we spend our own time getting better at it.
They hate that we invest in ourselves.
They hate that we actually give a damn about doing the job well.

Could you imagine being mad because someone wants to be good at a job that exists to serve other people. A job where mistakes can cost someone their life. A job where the person next to you is counting on you to know what the hell you’re doing.

So yes we’re probably going to talk about the job and everything else that makes us better. We’re probably going to spend money on training and equipment instead of worrying about whether someone thinks we’re “doing too much.” And we’re definitely going to be proud of what we do.

Let them hate because I’d rather train to be good at this job rather than be comfortable and complacent in being mediocre at the job and hate others for doing more.
