Think OINK Think OINK (Observe-Innovate-Network-Kinesthetic)

Think OINK Project is in innovative project started by the Streator Ag Department, Streator, Illinois and Brockman Farms, Verona, Illinois. The main goal is to allow students to become closer to production practices in agriculture and be able to identify the many process, steps, and ideals that it takes to create a wholesome, marketable product. Think OINK concentrates on the basic concepts of Obs

erving, Innovating, Networking, and Kinesthetic Learning through the concept of hands on learning. The Think OINK Project focuses on the implementation of animal reproduction through a class project initiative! Students in the Agriscience class at Streator Township High School Ag Department observe the insemination process, monitor the growth and development of babies while in the womb, as well as care for the piglets after they are born. This allows students to gain a hands on approach to their learning and identify the importance of production agriculture practices.

In the top left hand corner, you will see a red sign that says greenhouse but during the month of January and February it switches roles to a farrowing house.

Take a moment to welcome one of our 2024 Think OINK Sows, Shaquisha! Shaquisha is a Duroc! Durocs are red in color, have floppy ears and are traditionally great mothers. She is due with her piglets this weekend! Watch Shaquisha live throughout the course of the next week as she gives birth to her piglets!

We will be welcoming our other sow, Herberta, later this weekend as well!

🐷 On Thursday of this week we had Dr. Olson, a veterinarian from Novak-Rinker Veterinary Clinic, come and castrate the boars (male piglets). We would like to thank her for her time in explaining the process as well as being a great teacher in allowing some of our students to try it for themselves!

🐷 During class she explained to students that this common practice in pork production occurs to eliminate boar taint, an poor odor and flavor that occurs in the meat if the pigs are left intact. Castration also reduces aggression in pigs which helps keep both others pigs and farmers safe. The entire process for a pig takes less than a minute and the piglets recover quickly from the procedure.

🐷 Again, a big thank you to Dr. Olson for her help and expertise!

A full week has past since the sows have left and the piglets are loving the extra space to run around. Take a look below and see how much they have grown just in the last week!

Just one more week left with these guys!

🐷 🐷 For fun: Did you hear about the piglets who wanted to do something special for Mother’s Day?
They threw her sowprize party.

🐷🐷🐷 The piglets are named!!! Over the last week, the Agri-Science class took some time to create these graphics to introduce their chosen piglets and each piglets’ name.

Each week, the groups are responsible for weighing their piglet to determine their average rate of gain, how much weight they gain each day. The piglets have grown fond of the starter feed, which has helped them gain weight as well!
