We were happy to provide a slightly more exciting ride to school this morning! Thanks to St. Michael School Streator, IL for letting the Streator Fire Department handle drop-off duty. 🔥

We’re pretty sure this is one acceptable reason to show up to school with lights and sirens. 🚒

A First for Streator Fire Department

Today, Firefighter TJ Renner started his first day of Paramedic School, marking an important milestone for both TJ and the Streator Fire Department.

TJ is the first Streator firefighter to attend paramedic school while employed by the department.

While the department currently employs two firefighter/paramedics who earned their paramedic licenses prior to joining Streator Fire, TJ is the first member to undertake the challenge as part of the department’s commitment to developing its own personnel.

And he won’t be the last.

The Streator Fire Department has committed to sending one firefighter to paramedic school each year, steadily increasing the number of cross-trained firefighter/paramedics available to serve the community.

Paramedic school is a significant commitment—months of classroom education, clinical rotations, ambulance time, studying, testing, and countless hours spent developing the skills necessary to provide advanced life support care.

For TJ, today is Day 1.

For the department, it represents another investment in its people and another step forward in strengthening the level of service provided to the citizens of Streator.

We’re proud of TJ for stepping up to take on the challenge and look forward to following his journey.

This afternoon, Firefighter Sean McGurk took the oath of office and was officially sworn in as a member of the Streator Fire Department.

Sean’s badge was pinned by his mother, marking the beginning of what we hope will be a long and rewarding career serving the City of Streator.

Getting to this moment wasn’t easy. Sean earned his place through a competitive hiring process, and now the real work begins. Over the coming weeks and months, he’ll continue his in-house training, spend time working alongside C Shift, and then head to the Illinois Fire Service Institute for seven weeks of fire academy training followed by additional specialized training.

Today, though, was about welcoming the newest member of the team.

Sean was joined at City Hall by family, friends, fellow firefighters, City staff, and members of the department who came out to support him as he took his oath.

Congratulations, Firefighter McGurk.

WELCOME TO THE TEAM, SEAN!

Today marks Day 1 for Streator Fire Department’s newest firefighter, Sean McGurk.

Getting here wasn’t easy—and it wasn’t supposed to be.

Before ever reporting for his first day, Sean successfully completed the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), written examination, interview, polygraph examination, psychological evaluation, and a comprehensive physical examination.

And now, the real work begins.

Sean will spend his first three weeks working 40-hour weeks, completing intensive in-house training with Streator firefighters. He’ll then spend a week working alongside the members of his assigned crew, C Shift, getting his first look at life in the firehouse and on the apparatus.

Then it’s off to Champaign for his next challenge:

Seven weeks at the Illinois Fire Service Institute Fire Academy

Following the academy, Sean will remain at IFSI to complete additional training in Hazardous Materials Operations and Common Passenger Vehicle Rescue, preparing him for the wide variety of emergencies Streator firefighters are expected to handle.

Tomorrow, Sean will officially take his oath of office and receive his badge during his swearing-in and badge-pinning ceremony at City Hall.

There is a long road between becoming a candidate and becoming a Streator firefighter.

Today, Sean took another big step down that road.

As a quick refresher, outdoor warning sirens are designed to alert people who are outdoors that a potential emergency or dangerous condition exists.

Outdoor sirens are just one part of the warning system. Make sure you have multiple ways to receive emergency alerts, especially when indoors or sleeping.

Stay aware. Stay informed. Stay prepared.

School starts back up today! 📕🏫 Please be aware of your speed and pay attention while driving in a school zone!

As students head back to school, use extra caution especially around school buses, crosswalks, and neighborhoods.

When a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, you MUST stop.

On two-lane roads, traffic in both directions must stop.
On one-way streets, all lanes must stop.
One four-lane roads, only traffic traveling in the same direction as the bus must stop.

Never pass a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing. It's not only illegal (and we're sure the Streator Police Department would prefer not to meet you this way👮), it puts children at serious risk as they enter, exit, and cross the street around the bus.

As the school year gets underway, give yourself a little extra time, put the phone down, and be patient around buses and school zones.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to occur in the area today. There remains a potential for an intense line of storms to develop and produce destructive winds. Other storms may also produce damaging winds, brief tornadoes, and hail, and there is also a potential for flash flooding, so remain weather aware today!

Here’s the latest from the US National Weather Service Chicago Illinois about last nights severe weather events.

Remember:
1. Have multiple ways to receive weather warnings (e.g. weather radio). Outdoor warning sirens are designed to warn people who are outside. They may not be loud enough to be heard inside your home.

2. Have a plan to shelter. Go to the basement or if you do not have a basement go to the lowest level of your home and find an interior room. Stay away from windows and doors.

3. After the storm has passed stay out of damaged areas. Allow emergency crews space to work. Be cautious as there are many dangers found in the wake of storms.
