Juneteenth (a blend of "June" and "Nineteenth") is an annual holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. It marks the day in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that the Civil War had ended and all enslaved people were free.

Today was an exciting day to present a Vietnam Veteran his long awaited Purple Heart and other medals. Robert Barnes was wounded in action but his military records did not reflect that. Through strong diligence, our Deputy Director, Eric Morin, uncovered that Mr. Barnes was issued the certificate but it was not listed on his discharge papers, nor recognized by the VA for decades because of it. Working with Charles at Congressman Bresnahan’s office, they were able to request and ultimately received those medals. It is not only about the sacrifice, it is about the validation and powerful impact that comes with serving and making sure Veterans receive all the benefits they have so rightly earned. We thank Mr. Barnes and his family for his service to our Country, and are proud to have been able to do this for him. 🇺🇸

Please be advised that our grave flags are delayed. There are a few reasons for this, one which is not due to us ordering too late. The supplier had bulk back orders for America 250 distributions and when they tried to call to deliver them on Monday, the calls did not transfer to the new phone number. We are trying to rectify this and have them here by tomorrow.

Our Director had the honor to attend not 1 but 2 different roundtable discussions with the Secretary of the VA, Doug Collins today. We discussed VA claims processing, VA healthcare, su***de, homelessness and other topics focused on taking care of our Veterans. Secretary Collins recognized and commended the work of our County VSO’s and the value they bring. Pictured alongside Director Kaye are County Directors from Lackawanna, Wayne, Pike and Luzerne. 🇺🇸
