We're still on for tonight's free, fun, and family-friendly 2026 Creek Creatures Program at Cherry Valley National Wildlife Refuge at 6:30PM! The event will be held rain or shine and if we're unable to go outside due to lightning, we will look at macroinvertebrates under the microscope inside the building. We'll take a walk through the woods and then wade into the Cherry Creek to search and dipnet for crayfish, dragonflies, fish, frogs, and macroinvertebrates. We will be wading into the creek, so please wear water shoes if you have them and clothes you don't mind getting wet! Afterwards, we'll head back inside to look at our finds under the microscope for a close-up look! Please note that service animals are welcome, but pets are not allowed. No pre-registration is required.

Every year during the second week of June, we shell-e-brate native turtles and the people and partners working to conserve them for Wild Turtle Week. Here at Cherry Valley National Wildlife, refuge staff and partners are working with students from local schools (Bangor, Pleasant Valley, and Stroudsburg High Schools) to head-start wood turtle hatchlings. Check out the article below to learn more about this innovative conservation technique that's increasing the survival rate of wood turtle hatchlings and engaging youth in conservation. https://www.fws.gov/story/schooling-turtles

Thank you to the wonderful students from Mrs. Garr's science classes at Pleasant Valley High School for joining us today at the Cherry Valley National Wildlife Refuge! The students brought the wood turtle head-starts they had been raising as part of the wood turtle head-starting program. Students had an opportunity to practice wood turtle radio-telemetry and survey for macroinvertebrates in the Cherry Creek!

Stop the press! We’ve all heard the viral stat that a single opossum can eat thousands of ticks in a season, but it turns out that’s a bit of a tall tale. As we recognize Lyme Disease Awareness Month this May, it is important to ground our backyard myths in real science. While opossums are amazing neighbors—they are resilient scavengers that clean up fallen fruit and carrion—researchers studying wild populations haven’t found evidence that they are the "tick vacuums" we once thought. In fact, a review of over two dozen diet studies found zero ticks in their natural diet.
They might not be eating all the ticks in your yard, but they’re still worth keeping around! Just remember that this month is a great time to double-check your own tick-prevention habits while enjoying the outdoors.

Spring is in the air, and so are our feathered friends! 🐦 The Field Sparrow (Spizella pusilla) is making its way back home from Mexico and the southern U.S. Keep your ears open for their distinctive "bouncing ball" song—they usually start arriving in early April. Welcome back!
