FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Patrick County invites community to participate in a community input session on the Comprehensive Plan update on March 10 at Patrick & Henry Community College - Stuart Site

Patrick County, VA: Patrick County is beginning a review and update of its Comprehensive Plan, the long‑range guide that shapes growth, development, and community priorities for the next 15–20 years. To ensure the plan reflects the values and vision of the people who call Patrick County home, county officials, in partnership with the West Piedmont Planning District Commission and the Patrick County Planning Commission, will host a community input session on Tuesday, March 10, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM in the Community Room at the Patrick & Henry Community College Stuart site.

The drop‑in event is an opportunity for residents, business owners, and community groups to share their ideas for Patrick County’s future. Attendees will be invited to offer feedback on topics such as land use, economic opportunity, housing, transportation, outdoor recreation, and other priorities that will guide the development of the updated plan. Participants will also be able to speak directly with local officials and planning partners to help shape the county’s strategic direction.

“The Comprehensive Plan is our shared roadmap for the future,” said Sarah Wray of the Patrick County Planning Commission. “Input from the community is essential to making sure this plan truly reflects what residents want to see in the years ahead.”

Throughout the event, interactive stations and feedback tools will be available to allow participants to contribute in ways that are accessible and meaningful. The session is informal, and community members are welcome to drop in any time between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM.

Work on the Comprehensive Plan will continue through 2026 and additional public input will be sought during that time. A full draft of the updated plan is expected to be completed by the end of 2026 for review by the Patrick County Board of Supervisors.

It is with great pleasure that Patrick County Administration recognizes Christie Vernon as the January 2026 Employee of the Month.

Christie began her career in the Patrick County Department of Social Services in February 2006 as an TANF Eligibility Worker. In July of 2012, she became a Benefit Programs Specialist. Effective September 2019, Christie was promoted to Benefit Programs Supervisor, the position in which she currently serves.

Christie’s nomination is based on her exemplary job performance and dependability. According to Christie’s nominator, “she is a wonder. She has knowledge and is involved in every single program and process at Patrick County Social Services.” Christie supervises six benefit programs: Families and Children’s SNAP, Families and Children’s Medical, TANF, VIEW, Childcare, and IV-E Foster. She also helps with the supervision of the heating/cooling utility programs, Crisis, and PIPP.

In addition to her program supervision duties, Christie tracks and certifies employee timesheets, ensures DSS meets state voter guidelines, assists Foster Care and Child/Adult Protective Services, assists with purchase orders, provides information for budgets and board meetings, assists with new worker caseloads, and “countless other things as they occur.” Her nominator states, “Ask her and she knows or will find out.”

“Christie’s drive and dedication to providing an exemplary customer service experience for our clients is a major reason why Patrick County DSS is one of the best agencies in the Western Region for employees and for clients. To say that Christie is a valuable asset to this county is a severe understatement. She is our employee of the month, every month.”

Please join us in congratulating Christie Vernon for being recognized as Patrick County’s January 2026 Employee of the Month!

Virginia’s statewide burning law – which prohibits outdoor burning between midnight and 4 p.m. – is in effect from Feb. 15
through April 30.

Virginia’s spring fire season is here, officially Feb. 15 – April 30. During that time, the statewide burn law is in effect, which prohibits outdoor fires between midnight and 4 p.m. 🔥🚫

Don't be fooled by the snow! Most of Virginia is in a drought caused by months of below-average rainfall. Already this year, DOF has responded to 80 wildfires that have burned nearly 800 acres.

The best ways you can prevent wildfires:
🔥 Wait until after the fire season to burn yard debris
🔥 If you must burn, avoid windy days
🔥 Never leave a fire unattended
🔥 Know the state burn law and local restrictions

Get more tips, and learn about the 4 p.m. burning law on DOF’s website: https://ow.ly/3SsV50Yey8q
