Last night around 10 PM the team was requested to respond into Company 27’s (Fairystone) first due for an injured hiker. Team members from Companies 26 (Town of Stuart) and 23 (Patrick Springs) responded with the rope rescue trailer. First arriving units from 27 and Station 4 (Smith River Vol. Rescue Squad) found the patient down a steep incline off the hiking trail. The patient was several miles into the trail. Crews hiked equipment in, accessed the patient, packaged, and set up a haul system to get the patient back up to the trail. The patient was then removed and transferred over to EMS. Strong work by all responding agencies:

Special Operations Team (23 and 26)
Station 4 (Smith River Rescue)

Members from Companies 23 (Patrick Springs) and 26 (Town of Stuart) utilizing Truck 26 as a high anchor for a short and long haul rope system. The short haul system is rigged to the tip of the ladder to move the rescuer over the desired location and works great by itself for roof rescues. The length of the short haul is long enough to overcome most parapet walls. Add the long haul system and you can lower and raise the rescuer/victim a much longer distance with a dual haul system anchored at the base of the ladder. Truck placement is key. Truck 26 is a great resource for Patrick County. Ladder trucks are versatile apparatus.

We had around 15 team members train on setting up a highline system last night utilizing the Arizona Vortex as a high anchor at Company 26 (Town of Stuart). A highline can be used to access patients in ravines, shuttle patients from low points to high points or vice versa, swift water rescues, etc.

Last night the team trained on setting up a basic highline system. This system can be used to move a patient across rivers, ravines, steep grades, etc. We utilized a fire truck for the high anchor point then tied off to a tree and tensioned for our highline. Then we packaged the patient, secured them to our high line, and set up a haul system to pull the patient across a rentention pond. We strive to train on a variety of scenarios to stay as proficient as possible for the folks we serve! Members from Companies 23 (Patrick Springs) 26 (Town of Stuart) and 27 (Fairystone) participated.
