West Central Valley Schools

West Central Valley Parents, Guardians, and Students,

At the end of September, the Iowa Department of Health in conjunction with Governor Kim Reynolds released new guidance for quarantine procedures in schools. When a masked individual tests positive and close contacts were wearing masks, only the COVID Positive student needs to isolate. Close contacts will no longer need to be quarantined, however, they will be notified by the Department of Health that they need to self-monitor for symptoms and continue to wear a mask at all times.

The administration and school board’s intent from the onset of the pandemic has been to keep kids in school and this is another mitigation strategy we can take to accomplish this very task. Last night our WCV school board voted unanimously to approve the attached facemask procedures. These procedures are put in place to keep all students and staff safe and learning in person.

Attached are the procedures West Central Valley School will utilize district wide for students, staff, and visitors in regards to masks. Please take a moment to read the procedures and feel free to reach out to your building administrator with any questions.

2019-2020 Art Slideshow

I just wanted to pass on some, actually a small portion, of the artwork that was created this year at WCV High. We had so many pieces that were amazing, but with limited time and a crazy end to the year these were the pieces that I could find easily or had pictures of beforehand. So I do hope that you enjoy a small piece of what our talented artist created this year. As a review we had 3 ALL-State Artist this year. That really is a big deal...so congrats again to Gage, Alexcia, Evelyn! It’s a shame our Wildcats artist didn’t get a chance to be recognized with awards and honors. This is true in all areas that our students excel in sports and activities. And I have no doubts with our wonderfully artistic seniors and young emerging artists coming up we would have fared very well at the WCAC Art Fair. Going for most awards and first places for a fourth year in a row, but there is always next year. Have a great summer Wildcats and be safe. Mr. Claire

3 WCV Art Students selected as All State Artists!
Evelyn Woodson, Gage Perrigo, and Alexcia Overbeck were 3 of 20 total artists selected by a blind judging committee across the whole state to be selected as All State Artist. Each submitted 10 pieces of work and wrote an artist statement that was reviewed by three college professors. This is a HUGE honor and reflects their hard work and talent! They will receive a banner to hang in the school and an online recognition from the Des Moines Art center. Thank you for representing WCV so incredibly well, and sharing your amazing work with us! Wildcats are on top of the Iowa art scene!

This would be great to do in our school❣️ Yukon High School held their annual Reality Check this week! During the event, freshman students are assigned a random annual income before traveling to booths like housing, clothing, insurance, and child care to make virtual payments from their budget. Although they must visit every booth, they are empowered to make their own personal decisions. One ninth grader reflected, “I got $35,000 which I thought was really good, but now I’m down to $20 and still have bills...I may have gone a little crazy with the nice truck.” Once they’ve paid their bills, the students who have money leftover receive a KitKat, while those with $0 left in their bank account receive a Zero bar. “This is an opportunity for the students to gain a deeper understanding of how their parents live on a day-to-day basis. It really puts things in perspective and gives them some real world experience and therefore, a better idea of what to expect in the future” said YHS teacher, Darryl Andrews. To provide real insight, every booth is hosted by local volunteers from their correlating industries, i.e., auto salesman sell the cars, bank officials run the bank, child care providers discuss child care. The real estate agents working in the housing booth reflected, “We actually learn a lot from the students too! After volunteering for several years at this event, we’ve gotten to see firsthand how the students’ decision-making processes have changed over the years.” If you’re a local business and would like to be involved in opportunities like this, please contact our Community Education Office at 405.354.2579 or email [email protected].
