Wednesday, June 24 at 2:30pm. Children, ages 4 to 12, and their families are invited to kick off 2026's Summer Reading Program with a fun and interactive program hosted by Science Heroes! Kids will be invited to participate as they experiment with the colorful science that’s all around us — while also exploring ways they can use S.T.E.M. to make our world better. Registration is required. Children must be accompanied by a caregiver.

While at the library, be sure to check out the tables of rocks and fossils on display courtesy of the Ecotarium. You can also sign up for the Summer Reading Program in the Children's Room, go on a prehistoric scavenger hunt, and contribute to our community art project. It's sure to be a fun and dinoriffic afternoon!

From the Friends of Dorothy to Boston marriages, LGBTQIA+ people have been living as their authentic q***r selves in every era, in every culture.

Genderq***r inclusion consultant, Ali Kane (she/they) will share q***r stories from the 1600s to the 1960s. From these accounts, you will gain a glimpse into q***r lives throughout history, as well as explore how these truths were uncovered and strategies for preserving q***r history today. Through case studies, you will learn how historians continue to grapple with validating these experiences within 21st Century understanding of identity, gender, and family.

This Pride Month event is sponsored by the Friends of the JHPL and presented in collaboration with the Charlton Public Library, the Jacob Edwards Library in Southbridge, and other Massachusetts libraries.

Registration is open now!
Wood carving is a meditative activity that you can do almost anywhere. Handmade spoons are usable forms of art that will last for years if carved well and taken care of.

Using simple tools participants will be instructed on the techniques of selecting wood, safe carving techniques, and how to care for their new eating utensil. You will go home with at least one wooden spoon and a whole new skillset! All materials and equipment are provided. Ages 16+ only.

Wednesday, June 24 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. Stop by the library to sign-up for summer reading and stay to explore fossils and geology with a special guest from the EcoTarium in Worcester. Visitors of all ages are invited to drop by, examine real specimens, and learn about Earth's history through interactive discovery. Come anytime during the program to explore at your own pace.

Join us for a special Baby Time at The Little Barn! We'll sing songs, read a book, and then play together in The Little Barn's indoor play space. The first 15 crawlers/walkers who arrive will receive a ticket for free entry courtesy of the Friends of the Joshua Hyde Public Library. After the first 15 crawlers/walkers, there will be a reduced fee of $10 per child to enter. All infants who are not yet crawling may enter for free. Children must be accompanied by a caregiver.
