- The U.S. Coast Guard is urging in the Sturgeon Bay area to exercise caution due to hazardous conditions and motor vessel traffic scheduled in Sturgeon Bay today.

The tugboat Erika Kobasic transited from Sturgeon Bay to Marinette, earlier this morning, and is scheduled to es**rt a second tugboat between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. today.

During part of this transit, the vessels will break ice near an area where hundreds of ice fishermen have been reported to be actively fishing.

Water temperatures this week have contributed to unstable ice, which could pose a risk to the safety of ice fishermen and their equipment. Ice fishermen in the area are urged to closely monitor ice quality and avoid fishing in any areas where the ice may be deteriorating.

U.S. Coast Guard Station Sturgeon Bay would like to welcome aboard our newest member, BM1 Delreal! BM1 is reporting from the east coast and is excited to be back to a cold weather unit! Welcome aboard shipmate!

Also recognized at quarters today, BM1 Barnes received a Letter of Commendation from his TDY trip to the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Myrtle Hazard in Guam back in February of 2023. BM1 assisted the crew in executing a multi-day search for a vessel that sank in the Micronesia area and was driving the cutter as Deck Watch Officer when the ship came upon two survivors clinging to a pallet and which were subsequently rescued in under 5 mins. Restricted visibility? No problem. Crews from U.S. Coast Guard Station Sturgeon Bay got underway this evening to conduct some two-boat training evolutions on Lake Michigan as a fog bank rolled in, excellent opportunity for some of the break-in crew members and coxswains to practice safely navigating and coming alongside other vessels.

Busy start to the summer season! Crews at U.S. Coast Guard Station Sturgeon Bay responded to a vessel which lost steering controls in 3-5 foot seas off Rock Quarry in Sturgeon Bay. The crew swiftly placed the vessel in stern tow and safely moored up in town. A slight increase in sea state could have resulted in the vessel capsizing, great work shipmates!
