Door County Composite Squadron Door County Composite Squadron is the local Civil Air Patrol squadron serving the Door Peninsula and Northeast Wisconsin.

General Information: The Door County Composite Squadron meets at its Headquarters at Door County Cherryland Airport (KSUE). Cadets meet every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11a.m. Senior members meet the first and third Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Door County Cherryland Airport is located at 3538 Park Drive, Sturgeon Bay.

#IndependenceDay is here and the Civil Air Patrol Chaplain Corps is highlighting the source of the phrase, "...the pursuit of happiness..." described by the founders in the Declaration of Independence as an unalienable right. It comes from the source of the CAP cadet #character development paradigm, Aristotle, and #Virtue Ethics. As a biologist, Aristotle was looking for the most excellent of human behaviors. He described happiness as the "meaning of life." BUT, he determined that true happiness as an excellence was not to be given by another. He wrote:

“Happiness depends upon ourselves.”

Each person alone is responsible for and determines their own state of "happiness." This is human excellence.

The founding fathers learned this and wrote it into our country's founding documents. Happy Fourth of July!

July 4th is just a few days away. I personally like the 4th of July because it is a day that emphasizes one of the greatest documents of the world: The Declaration of Independence. When we speak of ethics and values, this document expresses these components powerfully. Our Declaration states,

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed ... And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.”

In these words the whole understanding of the values that constitute a nation and its citizens is found. In the Civil Air Patrol these words define our own Four Core Values of Integrity, Volunteerism, Excellence, and Respect. It cost our Founding Patriots much to keep their promises to see this Declaration enacted and fulfilled. In the last 243 years since its signing we have gone through much as nation, but I pray that this next Thursday will bring to mind to all of us of the greatness of the principles upon which we were founded. In an increasingly polarized society may we be brought closer together by realizing our common foundations as a nation. And so to you and to your families, Happy 4th of July. Happy Birthday to our Land of the Brave. And may God bless America.

We give thanks for the countless brave men and women who have given their lives in the continuing fight for freedom. May we give thanks this coming 4th of July for our nation for our many privileges, not for our entitlements, that we may celebrate with purpose and continue to give praise for your Divine Hand upon us. #CharacterMatters ... #IndependenceDay is approaching. One of the phrases most closely quoted from the founding of the United States is the line from the Declaration of Independence that says,

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

So why was "happiness" mentioned? It comes from the source of the Civil Air Patrol cadet character paradigm now in use -- virtue ethics from Aristotle.

Aristotle, a biologist by trade who was looking to explain excellences in human behavior, said this:

“Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence.”

#Courage in the Civil Air Patrol... The Rescue of Rocky Mountain Airways Flight 217: CAP's Most Successful Find.

On the evening of December 4, 1978, Rocky Mountain Airways Flight 217, a DH-6 Twin Otter, took off from Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The two pilots and twenty passengers encountered a severe winter storm over the mountains and turned back. Within an hour after takeoff the plane clipped power lines and crashed in the mountains at 10,500 feet elevation.

Jim Alsum and his sons, Jerry and Dan, along with Don Niekerk were all members of the Colorado Wing-Civil Air Patrol and began the process of looking for the downed craft and the ELT despite the near-blizzard conditions. Jerry and Don with others climbed aboard a snowmobile and looked near the power lines since power was out for a large area. They found 21 of the 22 people on the plane alive in the snowstorm. Though another, the pilot, would perish at the hospital, twenty people survived the ordeal thanks to the heroism of CAP members.

The entire story of the flight's crash and rescue is told in the book, "The Miracle on Buffalo Pass" by Harrison Jones. There was a museum display dedicated to the rescue at Denver’s Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum. Members of CAP, Jerry and Don, were recognized for their bravery with the Silver Medal of Valor.

During the month of June, cadets of the Civil Air Patrol are studying the #virtue of courage in their character development classes. During this time, the chaplain corps is exploring the stories of the organization's brave heroes from the past. Join the corps for more during the month.

#Courage in the Civil Air Patrol (Silver Medal of Valor - Part II)

Yesterday, the chaplain corps reported on the Silver Medal of Valor as the third part of its series highlighting the #virtue of courage in the organization. At that time, little was known about the history of the award even though it is the highest award given by CAP. Since that post, there is more information available to share.

There is a "Medal of Valor Association" made up of recipients of the Silver and Bronze awards. It is not endorsed or supported by the Civil Air Patrol the way that the Spaatz Association receives recognition and support.

Facts about the "Medal of Valor Association" for Civil Air Patrol:

1) The Association has approximately 140 recipients of the Silver Medal of Valor including two members that received two Silver Medal of Valor awards.

Jerry Alsum (CO) and Robert Wallace (CA) are the only double silvers.

2) The Association has approximately 500 recipients of the Bronze Medal of Valor, and multiple members that have received two Bronze Medal of Valor awards.

Joe Furman (NM), Sam Lynch (NV), William Nix (AK) have a bronze and a silver. Donald Deering (AK), Gerald Genaw (FL), Ron Snorgrass (UT), and Warren Thompson (AK) each have two bronzes.

3) The Association does not have a database with all of the stories but has a copy of a few citations that members have posted on other forums in the past. CAP maintained a list up until about 7 years ago but they do not share it with the Association anymore.

The first Medal of Valor was presented in the mid-1950's. Prior to that the Distinguished Service Award was used to honor valor.
