Despite having to social distance, thirty Door County Altrusans were able to meet this month virtually to discuss how we can continue to fulfill our mission. We are committed to helping the community, even if it means approaching it from a new angle.

This month brought exciting notification of two generous grants for Altrusa’s annual Back-to-School Fair. The Fair, to be held August 1st, hopes to serve up to 675 children this year. For this many participants, Altrusa’s largest service project will require much funding for school supplies, backpacks and gym shoes. Altrusan Cheri Meyvis writes for a number of grants for the Back-to-School Fair, and was notified recently that Cellcom will be providing $500 and Wisconsin Public Service Foundation will provide $1000. Thank you Cellcom, Wisconsin Public Service, and Cheri, from Altrusa and the children we serve!

Last week was our annual Holiday Extravaganza that includes a silent auction, bag raffle, 50/50 cash raffle, etc to raise money to support our Back To School Fair Program as well as our other programs. It takes a village to make things happen. We are incredibly grateful to local businesses that donate items, their time, money to help make this event happen. We are also thankful to Stone Harbor for accommodating us to hold the event each year, to all of the ladies that attend the event to donate, to our fellow Altrusans that spend hours behind the scenes and many others. It is a lot of fun! If you want to get involved in some way, please feel free to reach out!

Happy Holidays!

Carson Dvorak, Sturgeon Bay boys soccer: The Sturgeon Bay boys soccer team was making its eighth appearance at state since 2010, coming short of the gold ball in every year except 2015. Carson was one of the biggest reason why they captured that second championship. In the Division 4 semi-final matchup with Northland Pines, he netted a lone goal and added an assist as Sturgeon Bay won 5-1. Sturgeon Bay faced off with The Prairie School in the championship match. After 90 minutes, it was knotted up at 1-1 and headed to overtime. After a scoreless first overtime, Carson netted the game-winning goal in the 107th minute to make the final score 2-1 and clinch Sturgeon Bay's second championship gold.

Tuesday, April 23rd was a lovely spring day in front of Associated Bank in downtown Sturgeon Bay. The bank responded to a grant application for Altrusa’s 2019 Back-to-School Fair with a very generous donation of $3000.00. Altrusan Cheri Meyvis applied for the funds, and Altrusan Anita Karwowski (photo center) accepted the check. Pictured left and right of Anita, are Bill Kopka, Associated’s Community Accountability Officer - visiting from the Milwaukee office, and Julie Dragseth, Residential Loan Officer at the Sturgeon Bay branch. Associated Bank is especially interested in supporting programs that involve literacy - which partners well with Altrusa’s focus. At the Fair in early August, Associated’s grant will provide grade-level school supplies to disadvantaged Door County children returning to school in the fall. Altrusa hopes to serve close to 650 children this year, and deeply appreciates the financial support from Associated Bank.

Altrusan Cheri Meyvis has been “granting and raving” once again! Congratulations to Cheri and Altrusa’s Back-to-School Fair for the good news recently that the Green Bay Packer grant she applied for has come through with a $4000 award! Cheri applied specifically for socks and underwear for the children attending the 2019 Back-to-School Fair, and this part of the budget has now been funded in part by the grant from the Green Bay Packers Foundation. Cheri and Altrusan Ann Knight attended the awards luncheon in Green Bay on December 5th to accept the check personally for the Door County Altrusa Foundation.

Four Altrusans volunteered to support the United Way’s fundraising efforts at the 7th Annual Car Show, sponsored by the Egg Harbor Business Association. It was a glorious, warm sunny day in Egg Harbor on August 11th, with hundreds of folks visiting the cars. Nearly 50 cars - sport, classic and modified - were on display in the Nicolet Bank parking lot and all over Harbor Park.

Altrusans Christianna Blahnik, Sue Dodge and Lisa Kiessel took care of registration in front of the Hatch Distillery in the early morning, and Nancy Kexel-Calabresa moved between car venues and sold and helped count fan-favorite voting ballots from 11-3:00. Sue and Nancy were lucky when owners Mary and Doc suggested hopping in their popular modified car for a shot. Proceeds from fan voting ballots benefitted the United Way, and the EHBA makes a donation to the United Way for our volunteer time.

This yearly event, held on the second Saturday in August, is a great opportunity for Altrusans to help fulfill the obligation to assist the United Way with their fundraising, since a substantial grant is received from them for the Back-to-School Fair. In addition to the ballot sales, the EHBA makes a donation to the United Way for our volunteer time.

Altrusans and friends assembled at Hope Church in Sturgeon Bay for a real “sewing bee.” Many yards of various colorful flannel were traced, shapes cut, and much buzzing was heard on the east side of the room - as those on serging machines whirred away.

This year, Altrusa of Door County's international service project was dedicated to Days for Girls. This international effort provides kits that include panties and washable sanitary napkins to girls in third world countries who cannot attend school while having their menstrual periods since sanitary products are not available. Altrusan Pam McCluskey heard about this project while attending the 2018 Altrusa District 7 conference. Pam found Titletown Days for Girls on the website and attended a workshop, asking what our Altrusa club could do to help. She brought in 4 gals from Green Bay heavily involved in Days for Girls - for instruction as to how to sew and prepare much needed pads and kits for Altrusa's first day of sewing. All kits through the Titletown group go to Haiti with the Green Bay Friends of Haiti Medical Team.

At a recent membership meeting, the club approved a purchase $500 of flannel which Pam obtained and preshrunk. Over 30 Altrusans and friends participated in the cutting and sewing project - including one Altrouser at the serger! Kits include 8 washable pads for their periods and panties. Nearly 500 pads were completed over the first two days, and a number of kits fully assembled in colorful bags that included panties. Another day of sewing on August 23rd for will complete the project.

June 26th was a magnificent day in Egg Harbor at the Horseshoe Bay golf course. The seventh annual golf outing, conducted by Marine Travelift, was held with plenty of sunshine, light breezes and happy golfers. Proceeds from this event support Altrusa’s Back-to-School Fair.

Marine Travelift’s Executive Assistant Anna Seyfer shared that the participating golfers are the company’s professional and executive business contacts. While there were many repeat golfers, there were also many new folks in attendance this year.

Altrusans Carrie Tjernagel (chair), Katie Smullen and Jane DeCock welcomed the golfers as they checked in during the late morning and received box lunches. Two Altrusans golfed in the event - Barbie Pfeifer and Robyn Anderson. After the outing, a lovely spread of appetizers awaited the golfers inside the clubhouse bar room. Marine Travelift president and CEO Erich Pfeifer was on hand at the event, and at the conclusion, addressed the group and introduced Altrusan Nancy Kexel-Calabresa to say a few words about the project. Nancy gave a brief update about this year’s Fair and read special thank-you notes from children and parents.

Good news for Altrusa - there will be an 8th annual event next summer!

Altrusans Dolly Emerson and Nancy Kexel-Calabresa volunteered to pour and sell wine at the third Door County Wine Fest, held at Martin Park in Sturgeon Bay on Saturday, June 30th. The event was hosted by Door County Wine Trail in collaboration with the Sturgeon Bay Visitor Center. Although the weather was very hot, Dolly and Nancy had a table under the tent and next too an open flap!

The ladies actually volunteered on behalf of the United Way, to partly fulfill Altrusa’s obligation to help them raise funds, since grant monies are received from United Way for the Back-to-School Fair. United Way will receive a donation for the total of 10 hours worked by Dolly and Nancy.

Wine sold for $5 and $8 per generous glass of various whites and reds, sweet and dry, and patrons purchased blue and red tickets to give to the servers. Dolly poured and sold eight varieties for von Stiehl Winery, and Nancy poured and sold seven for Stone’s Throw Winery. The work was a bit hard since there were many corks to pull and no screw caps in sight from these two wineries! Dolly worked the hardest since von Stiehl’s offerings were more popular that day. Business was brisk for much of the afternoon, as roughly 3000 patrons were admitted.

In addition to the wine pouring and apparel tent, there was a tent for wine and cheese tasting, live music and a variety of food vendors from 12 pm to 5 pm that day.
