Twenty-five years ago today, our nation was forever changed.

Following the attacks of September 11, 2001, Coast Guard Auxiliarists answered the call to action. By supporting operations in New York Harbor and patrolling ports and critical infrastructure, they provided critical support when needed most.

Eligible Auxiliarists were recognized with the Department of Transportation 9/11 Ribbon for their service in recovery, force protection, and infrastructure security.

Today, we remember those lost and honor all who responded.

Swimming in open water (lakes, rivers, ponds, etc.) is different than swimming in a pool due to wave action, currents, depth, and no close access to safe ways to get out of the water. Swimming in undesignated areas is the leading activity for most drownings that occur at USACE lakes and river projects, so be prepared and please wear a life jacket when swimming, floating, and playing in open water.

Today we recognize and celebrate the brave men and women of the United States Coast Guard, who have served our nation with dedication, courage, and commitment for generations.

Founded on August 4, 1790, the Coast Guard has a proud history of protecting our waters, supporting maritime safety, responding during times of crisis, and serving wherever they are needed.

Their motto, **“Semper Paratus,”** means **“Always Ready”** — a reminder of their unwavering commitment to be prepared to answer the call.

Thank you to all Coast Guard members, past and present, for your dedication to our country.

Be aware it’s not just air quality being hurt by the smoke - but visibility as well. Use caution when underway.

Smoke from wildfires to the north has been progressing southward today and will continue to impact the area over the next few days. Air quality and visibility will be impacted. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has issued an Air Quality Advisory due to the air quality impacts.

July is an extremely busy time of year on our nation’s waterways, so please wear your life jacket and engine cutoff device. Always boat sober and operate your vessel in a safe and friendly manner.

Safety should always come first on the water. Before heading out, make sure you and your passengers are prepared for unexpected situations by having the proper equipment and a plan in place.
