Door County WIC Program

Door County WIC Program Women, Infants, and Children Nutrition Program

The purpose of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) is to promote and maintain the health and well-being of nutritionally at-risk pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum women, infants and children. WIC provides supplemental nutritious foods, nutrition and breastfeeding information, and referral to other health and nutrition services. WIC promotes and supports breastfeeding.

Mission: Our goal is to help pregnant and breastfeeding women and children under the age of five stay healthy.

A super easy meal: a loaded baked potato. Potatoes are a good source of vitamins C and B6, folate, and fiber (if you eat the skin). Top with favorites like broccoli and cheese. Or try creative combos like diced tomatoes and avocados; black beans and salsa; or caramelized onions and mushrooms. #healthy #easy #kidfriendly #momstrong

We are so appreciative to Jacque for donating her time and money to provide warmth and comfort for the babies in our community. What an incredible young lady! What a beautiful act of kindness!

Jacque Sandoval, a Gibraltar 6th grade student, has been busy creating baby blankets to donate to families in need. She is pictured here handing them off to Casey Franda a representative from Door County WIC (Women, Infant, and Children) Program. The blankets were made during Genius Hour, a class where students have choice time to work on something of high interest. Some students choose a particular area to study, some build things, some get creative with art, others try to do service projects. Jacque wanted to do something that could help people. She was originally going to do a food drive, but decided blankets would be fun. She paid for the materials and was able to create 8 blankets. Since then she has received a few donations for materials and is in the process of creating more blankets! Nice work Jacque!

Wisconsin Department of Health Services

The Door County Department of Health and Human Services reports that due to the federal government shutdown, current FoodShare recipients will have their February FoodShare benefits put on their QUEST electronic benefits cards earlier than usual (as soon as January 20, 2019). The amount will be the normal February monthly benefit amount. FoodShare benefits will not be put on QUEST cards in February, so FoodShare members are advised to budget and plan accordingly. Individuals can submit new FoodShare applications during the shutdown, however federal funding for benefits has not yet been guaranteed. FoodShare benefits are 100% federally funded.
Programs not yet impacted by the federal government shutdown through February: The Women, Infants & Children Program (WIC), the FoodShare Employment and Training (FSET) Program, FoodShare Outreach, TEFAP (emergency food outreach providing food to pantries and meal sites), and the Commodity Supplemental Food Program.
Programs NOT impacted by the federal government shutdown: Health care benefits provided under BadgerCare Plus, Medicaid, and SeniorCare; Wisconsin Shares child care subsidies, Wisconsin Works (W-2) payments, and Kinship Care payments.
The Wisconsin DHS will continue to post up-to-date information regarding impacted programs on their webpage, www.dhs.wisconsin.gov .
