Have you experienced a trauma or a very stressful event? You may be eligible for this study!
There is a new study going on at the VA that pays you and your significant other to participate in a study that tests a new couples therapy for trauma-related concerns. They plan to enroll about 30 vets and their significant others at the VA Health Care facility in MN. The therapy takes 12-17 weeks. During this time, they are wanting to see if the new type of therapy will work to improve the symptoms of PTSD.
YOU AND YOUR PARTNER WILL BE COMPENSATED! Veterans will be paid up to $425 and significant others are paid up to $245 for answering questions during the study period. (the reason partners are paid less is because the participation levels are higher for the vet) You and your partner will also be allowed up to $12 per hour towards the cost of child care costs.
The treatment focus will be on improving your PTSD and is based on Prolonged Exposure (PE) and Integrative Behavioral Couples Therapy (ICBT). PE will teach you to gradually approach trauma related memories, feelings, and situations that have been uncomfortable since your trauma. The IBCT is used to change how PTSD affects your relationship with your significant other. For more information on PE, please visit: www.ptsd.va.gov/understand_tx/prolonged_exposure.asp
If you are interested in this study and are wanting to determine your eligibility, then please call Erin at 612-670-6451. You will answer questions over the phone and online to see if the study is a good fit. Questions are about PTSD and how your family is doing.
If you meet the criteria, you and your significant other will attend 12-17 weeks of treatment with a therapist. Sessions take place weekly and are 90 minutes each. Your participation will take 4-6 months. The entire research study itself is expected to take approximately 18 months.
IF AT ANY POINT YOU WANT TO STOP PARTICIPATIING, YOU MAY DO SO!
The study is funded by the VA's Rehabilitation Research and Development Services and was approved by the Minneapolis VA Health Care System Institutional Review Board.
