The City of Sturgis would like to thank our mutual aid partners for their support and efforts to restore power and assist with clean up for our electric utility customers. When severe weather hits and outages like this occur the way utility companies come together is quite incredible. We extend our deepest gratitude to our mutual aid partners who helped during this outage, working day in and day out alongside our team to clear trees, debris, repair power lines, and restore power to our customers. Your hard work and dedication is something we are all very thankful for.

FINAL STORM UPDATE

This will be the last regular storm update, as City electric crews are expecting to restore power to all customers other than those with service repair needs by the end of the day today (Tuesday June 16th). Remaining outages will be related to re-connecting homes that had damage to their customer equipment following repairs.
As shown in the included graphic, customer equipment includes anything from the service point to the home (excluding the meter itself).

Customers who have experienced damage to the customer equipment will need to have a licensed electrician repair these elements prior to power being reconnected. City crews have been making contact with residents whose property has been identified as one where an electrician is needed for service to be restored; this may include an orange tag left at your property.

Customers who require these repairs should make sure that their electrician contacts the electric department at (269) 659-7287 once the repair has been completed so the City is aware that you are ready to be reconnected and crews can be scheduled to complete the work during normal business hours (7:00 am to 3:30 pm).
If you do not believe your customer equipment needs repair but are without power, please contact the outage line at 269-659-7255.
While the majority of service restoration work is complete, Electric and Public Services crews are continuing to work to address issues related to storm cleanup and repairs. A big thank you to all our mutual aid partners who helped us restore power in a timely manner.

We will continue to provide updates on our City page and other outlets on matters related to storm cleanup and available services. Thank you to everyone for your continued patience and support.

STORM UPDATE #10

As of 1:00 pm, customer outages are at approximately 70. Crews continue to make progress on power restoration with additional work yet to be completed. If you have damage to the weatherhead or service mast on your house, please contact an electrical contractor for repair. Once that repair is complete, the contractor should contact the Sturgis Electric Department at 269-659-7287 so City crews can be dispatched to complete the connection.

Public Services crews are continuing to clear brush from the streets, parks, cemetery and other priority locations. A city-wide brush pick up is bring planned. This pick up will follow our standard process, beginning on the north side of the City and working their way south. This will be a slow process as there is a lot of brush to be removed. As a reminder, please do not park in the street in front of brush piles to allow for crews to gain access to remove the debris.

Please continue to keep in mind that that areas with downed trees and lines may be dangerous, whether in City streets, sidewalks, parks, or your own yard. Please stay back from any downed line at least 25 feet and generally exercise caution in these areas.

The Compost Site is open regular hours:
Tuesday: Noon to 7:30 pm
Thursday: Noon to 7:30 pm
Saturday: 9 am to 5 pm
Sunday: 1 pm to 5 pm

At this time, we ask that only grass clippings and tree debris from the storm be dropped off at the Compost Site. Crews are working to process the tree debris as quickly as possible. Under the circumstances, large load fees are currently suspended.

The St. Joseph County United Way is holding a food distribution on Friday, June 19th starting at noon at Radiant Life Church, 907 N. Nottawa St. They will have 200 food boxes with meat, milk, cereal, and other fresh foods available. These will be available on a first come first served basis.

Should you have additional needs or require assistance with tree debris removal, please contact the United Way office at 269-467-9099. If you belong in a service club, church group, or an organized company activity group, and would like to help with cleanup from the recent storm, please call the United Way office to get on a contact list as needs arise.

We thank you for your patience and understanding while we continue to navigate this cleanup effort.
