About
Safety Town is a miniature version to scale of the City of Sturgis with roads, sidewalks, buildings, and working stop lights and cross walk lights. Children learn proper pedestrian and bicycle safety on a realistic training ground. A major component of Safety Town is a two week summer program for students entering kindergarten. During the two week camp students will attend class for two hours daily including classroom instruction and practical application. Topics of study include pedestrian, bicycle, bus, internet, and personal safety. The camp utilizes police, fire, emergency communications operators, school personnel, and the electric department to provide safety lessons to the campers. Safety Town has been made possible by the generous community sponsors named under the sponsor tab.

Today was Bus Safety Day at Sturgis Safety Town for the second week of Safety Town camps. For most of our campers, this was their first time riding on a school bus. Sturgis Public Schools bus driver, Brenden, drove our campers around town today on a bus and our kids really enjoyed it. We practiced going over railroad tracks, and we drove through the Meijer, Walmart and McDonald's parking lots. We stopped by most of the SPS schools today, and our kids were able to run around in the gyms. We then finished the day with a quick graduation ceremony. Thank you to Brenden for driving us around town today. Thank you to all of the parents and presenters for allowing this weeks camp to be a success. Thank you all for another great week!

Thank you!

Today was Electric Safety Day at Safety Town. All of our campers had the opportunity to ride in an elevator, and each camper was able to push the elevator buttons. Our campers then went on a scavenger hunt around Wall School looking for items that use electricity. The Sturgis Electric Department was not able to make it today because they were still restoring power to the residents of Sturgis. We want to give a HUGE shoutout and thank you for all of the work they have done, as well as the many other departments and entities for restoring power and clearing our streets here in Sturgis!

Thank you!

Today was Fire Safety Day at Safety Town for the second week of Safety Town Camps. We were joined by firefighters D. Hickey and B. Sprowls from the Sturgis Department of Public Safety. Our campers learned the importance of stop, drop and roll as well as crawling to safety under the smoke. Our campers then got to see some firefighter gear up close. We then went outside and saw an ambulance and our campers then all got the chance to spray a fire hose. The campers then tried to spay me with water, and some of them were successful!

Thank you!

Today was bike safety day at Sturgis Safety Town for week #2 of camps. This class had been taught by a man named Jim Cook for many years. In honor of Jim, we did the best we could to teach our campers about bike safety today. The campers were able to practice their skills outside in the parking lot by doing some cone drills. The campers really enjoyed themselves and a lot of laughs were had by all!

Thank you!

The campers learned about the What, Where, and Who when calling 911 and reporting an emergency. The campers also went over scenarios and made mock 911 phone calls with Makenzi and Cierra from Central Dispatch. Officer Wiard showed the campers some of the equipment he uses, and he showed the campers his squad car. Thank you to Cierra, Makenzi and Bolo for stopping by and helping us with camp today.

Today was Electric Safety Day at Safety Town. Our campers were able to meet members of the Sturgis Electric Department, and we were able to see some of the equipment and gear that the electric department workers use on a daily basis. Our campers also were able to see a lineman climb a pole and see a lineman go up in their bucket truck. Our campers all thought it was pretty cool when the linemen waved at them from these heights. All of our campers then had the opportunity to ride in an elevator, and each camper was able to push the elevator buttons.

Thank you to Sturgis Electric Department workers Chad Nusbaum, Neil Case, Brendan Withington, Skyler Santori, Robert Risk, Evan Hutchison, Tyler Guzzy, Todd Crites, Brock Granger and Kim Prak for helping our campers today and taking time out of their very busy day to stop by Safety Town.

Thank you!

Today was bike safety day at Sturgis Safety Town. This class had been taught by a man named Jim Cook for many years. In honor of Jim, we did the best we could to teach our campers about bike safety. The campers were able to practice their skills inside the gym and hallways of Wall School because of the weather. The sounds of laughter were heard throughout the hallways and gym this morning! Thank you to Wall School principal Harmonee McCrea for allowing us to bike inside the school this morning!

Thank you!

The annual Sturgis Safety Town Halloween event took place Saturday night at Safety Town. Thank you to all of the families, parents, students, businesses, public safety personnel, governmental agencies and organizations for attending this event! Thank you to Sturgis Public Schools for providing the haunted bus again this year. Thank you to Rich Baker Farms for providing the cookies and hayrides this year! The event was filled with laughter and smiles from both children and adults, and the weather held off just long enough for us to finish this great community event. Thank you again to all of the businesses, donors, and organizations that continue to make this event possible. Thank you for continuing to support our families and kids in this wonderful community!

Thank you!
